Well, Catherine, we must have both been writing at the same time. Glad to hear from another DeLillo reader. I was amazed by Underworld. An advance copy arrived at the bookstore I worked at just before my vacation. Now, I don't usually read books that long anymore, because I am a very slow reader, even with all the practice. But this one I had to read, so I spent my two weeks in a hammock with DeLillo. I really liked, among other things, his imaginary lost Eisenstein movie. He invented a film in another book, but I can't remember right now which it was. How's your memory?
Hi Catherine, I hope following me will be fruitful and/or amusing. I came onto your profile, and the first thing I saw was Before Sunset among your favorites. I really liked this one a lot, though I haven't seen anything else yet by Linklater that reached me in the same way. Bob
Hi Catherine, I just caught up with your Non-Director Auteur thread from last year. You did a great job starting that discussion and keeping it going. Although it was inconclusive in the long run, as these talks usually are, it was interesting throughout. Just for the record, there are three producers in American film whom I think of as auteurs, though they all worked at times with notable directors: Val Lewton, David Selznick, and Arthur Freed. Bob
I think I came to this movie too late. It is unquestionably gorgeous, and the scenes of Victorian schoolgirls excitedly tearing off their gloves and giggling as if they each were on the edge of Freudian… read review
