I’d have to say The Thin Red Line, but Apocalypse Now is close.
If your talking about war movies that aren’t necessarily combat movies, though, and just have war as a major theme, Casablanca.
According to my calculations, which include my Blockbuster Online rentals(which is superior to Netflix, but that’s for another post) and theater viewings, roughly 252.
10. Fargo
9. In the Mood for Love
8. Werckmeister Harmonies
7. Pulp Fiction
6. The Thin Red Line
5. Tarkovsky’s Solaris
4. The Shining
3. Grand Illusion
2. 8 1/2
1. Casablanca
I just watched Symbiopsychotaxiplasm : Take One and didn’t much care for it, plus I don’t really like anything Terry Gilliam has ever done. And I hate Fat Girl. And Chasing Amy.
Cannibal Holocaust and Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. I mean, with those titles, you know exactly what you’re about to watch. Oh, and I almost forgot Snakes on a Plane.
Jaws is good, Close Encounters is mediocre, Raiders of the Lost Ark was O.K., the Color Purple was good, Empire of the Sun sucked, Schindler’s List was good, and Munich sucked. His best movie was Jaws. And when I mentioned E.T., it’s just a movie that everyone seems to love that I don’t like at all. Plus he hasn’t done anything that good since Svaing Private Ryan, and for some people to call him one of the best directors of all time is just dumb.
I second Ozu, but I may just be thinking Floating Weeds. Did anyone else feel that Criterion’s treatment of that film was less than what we’ve come to expect from them?
@ Brendan Bedaw
My Best Picture nominee would be to reinstate There Will Be Blood into the running, and give it the award it deserved last year, but that’s just me.
Did Youth Without Youth come out this year? Because that movie was a nonsensical wreck.
I do find myself liking a lot of movies that no one else really did, though. Especially those released throughout the summer. I liked Hancock and the new Indiana Jones speifically. I’ll even admit to this; The Happening wasn’t horrible.
I’ve never fallen asleep in a theater, but I do at home sometimes. Recently I fell asleep during Aliens Vs. Predator 2, and now I thank god everyday that I did.
Does anyone else share my affinity for Captain Beefheart? In my opinion, he’s the single greatest musical genius the world has ever known.
Radiohead is great too.
I concur. Chasing Amy was a piece of crap. I wanted to punch that movie in the face. In my opinion, Kevin Smith has no business being issued by the same company that issues Kurosawa and Tarkovsky.

Blockbuster’s in-store trade is better than streaming the movies because of obvious video/audio qualities.
