I imagine that Wall-E, The Assassination of Jesse James, and Zodiac will all stand the test of time. Personally, the biggest emotional response I’ve had to an American film during the five years was to Kelly Reichardt’s Old Joy, which probably had as much to do with timing as anything else.
Yeah, I saw I Come with the Rain at a jam-packed Tokyo screening (the allure of Kimura Takuya and Lee Byung-hun is strong in these parts) and it’s definitely a contender. The ham-fisted Christ analogies really made me wonder what has happened to the director of something as subtle as The Scent of Green Papaya. Next up, Murakami’s Norwegian Wood.
The soundtrack was quite nice though. Godspeed, Silver Mt. Zion etc.
Impossible to give a definitive list, but my current lastfm top ten is as follows:
Bob Dylan
The Velvet Underground
David Bowie
Tom Waits
Maher Shalal Hash Baz
Young Marble Giants
The Beach Boys
Elliott Smith
The Auteurs (no shit)
Serge Gainsbourg
For what it’s worth (and that’s probably not much) this is my top ten:
1) Innocence (Lucile Hadzihalilovic, 2004)
2) Werkmeister Harmonies (Béla Tarr, 2000)
3) Mulholland Drive (David Lynch, 2001)
4) In the Mood for Love (Wong Kar-Wai, 2000)
5) Yi Yi (Edward Yang, 2000)
6) Talk to Her (Pedro Almodóvar, 2002)
7) There Will Be Blood (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2007)
8) 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (Cristian Mungiu, 2007)
9) Uzak (Nuri Bilge Ceylan, 2002)
10) What Time is it There? (Tsai Ming-Liang, 2001)
01. Film – The Red Shoes
02. Director – Ozu Yasujiro
03. Book – Mishima Yukio – The Sea of Fertility Tetralogy
04. Author – Mishima Yukio
05. Painting – Edgar Degas – Interior
06. Painter – Pierre-Auguste Renoir
07. Song – Glen Campbell – Wichita Lineman
08. Band/Singer – The Velvet Underground
09. Composer (classical) – Ludwig van Beethoven
10. Piece of music (classical) – Franz Schubert – Piano Sonata No. 20, D. 959
“if you mean “channels” like streaming links, then yes, i’ll have to accept that, moreover, in terms of plenty of goodies from sites like SurrealMoviez, AsianDVDClub and others.”
Are these sites fair game for the WC? If not, I might struggle with the Yoshida pictures.
Thanks, Blue. Flame and Women is definitely my favourite of Yoshida’s “anti-melodramas”. I’ve made a conscious decision not to play the obvious masterpiece in the first round, but if I am to make an early exit, I want it to be with something I can stand by wholeheartedly.
Great, I’ve got Meantime! A firm favourite during my teens, when Tim Roth’s Colin became an unlikely fashion icon. You’d pay a small fortune for those NHS specs these days.
Are there any kind souls out there who’d have the patience to help a complete luddite get a couple of films on youtube? It would be greatly appreciated.

Another vote for Kawase Naomi’s The Mourning Forest. And if my memory serves me correctly Shindo Kaze’s Love/Juice is also worth a mention.

Noah Baumbach’s Kicking & Screaming was beyond dreadful. I don’t think any time period had aged worse than the early to mid nineties.

“you mean the U.S. of A. mid-nineties, huh?”
I guess I was referring to the whole Gen X American thing. Maybe we’re not far enough removed yet?
There are obviously many exceptions though.

I live in Japan, so the local Tsutaya has got most of them, albeit without subtitles.
All my WC choices are free leech over at AsianDVDClub at the moment, so I hope a few are willing to give it a try.
