“Cinema is about so many things, but one important thing among so many is entertainment, the essence of cinema in my opinion, which you won’t find in any of Bergman’s
What utter bullshit. I’m glad not all cinema is about “entertainment”, because that’s one of the things that really turns me off with old hollywood, too much happy lovey dovey happy ending stuff, dancing and singing (musicals are probably on my bottom list of things i like in cinema) Cinema is not meant JUST to entertain, it has so many other important roles which i think are far more important then simple entertainment, one of the reasons why i love Bergman so much and prefer him over the likes of Ford, Hawks….
Howard Hawks, Orson Welles and Steven Spielberg for sure (and i could probably name another 3 or 5 american ones who are way too much in those top directors lists anyway)
The first two especially, since Spielberg does get some of the criticism he deserves, while Hawks and Welles are almost holy and untouchable and i never saw anyone seriously saying how overrated they really are. Since i saw so much bashing of certain great European or Asian directors, it was bloody time someone mentioned the Holy Cows of so called classic Hollywood and the supposed “golden era” directors. Not for me they aren’t :D
The only category of nominations from which i’d actually check (or have seen) all the movies is the foreign one. I think that says it all regarding the state of cinema, and where the most interesting and quality stuff comes from. At least of all the stuff they nominate, the rest of it is mostly pure mediocrity (to put it mildly) ;)
I’m already annoyed when people in cinema online communities rather talk about a new popular tv series and what is happening in each episode rather than movies so i’ll gladly say, tv is so overrated. While there surely are some interesting new tv series with some artistic merit, it will never reach a feature movie that can change your life like some did. Can’t really say the same for any tv series that i ever saw. Yes some were very funny, some captured an era nicely, but they can’t do what some movies can do. And i certainly don’t think they "are superior to most of the films put out every year ", that probably means you dont watch much cinema or its limited to hollywood types. There’s so much great new stuff made by lesser known directors and countries from all over the world and i rather spend my time discovering those than watching 115 episodes of some popculture tv stuff…
Its a bit disturbing that you start a topic about white guilt and then ask people to list “annoying” ones, which would imply its a subject that is annoying to you and such movies should “bother” us by some logic.
Anyway, Mississippi Burning is a nice example. Considering the history of racism, slavery, colonialism and the discrimination that happens nowadays, i’d say they don’t even make enough movies which whites should feel guilty about. Because we are responsible for more genocide, havoc, crimes, destruction, killings, burnings than any other race ever will be Like it or not, those are the facts and cinema hasn’t even barely touched on all of the stuff ..
