Pixote(1981) Directed by Hector Babenco. It is a stunning piece of enlightened juvenile deliquency and has an incredible soundtrack. It is out of print and I await anxiously it being out on DVD. A favourite among directors including Werner Herzog. Oh yes, and all of Andrei Tarkovsky, Werner Herzog, and Bela Tarr please.

Also, I listen to Godard read his Histoire Du Cinema cds when I fall asleep and his voice lulls me into the dreams reeling inside my noggin.
Forever Godard!
i have to agree with David. I was hesitant to watch a movie involving fishing, and would not have picked it up if it did not have the Criterion seal of approval, but I found the wit and absurdist conversation to fit right in with Criterion sensibilities.
It is hard to pick a favourite Herzog film, for he puts his entire being into each yet Strozek, Aguirre and Wings of Hope stand as favourites of Herzog’s films. I have to agree with others also, Herzog’s audio commentary is not to be missed.

This is a wonderous topic to stew over. Here is a few that just came to me, yet I am sure more will come throughout the evening and the cinema that could be will be unfolding in my head.
Jan Svankmajer directing The Story of an Eye by Georges Batille would be cinematic heaven.
Bela Tarr directing The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinski.
Harmony Korine directing The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov and Geek Love by Katherine Dunn.
Gus Van Sant directing The Stranger by Albert Camus.
Jean-Luc Godard directing Hunger by Knut Hamson.
Agnes Varda directing The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Wener Herzog directing Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.
Oh I just thought of a few more I could not resist posting:
Alejandro Jodorowsky directing Don Quixote by Cervantes and also Maldoror by Comte de Lautremont.
Darren Aronofsky directing Gravity’s Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon.
I ordered the Artemiev/Tarkovsky cds about 5 years ago on the internet. I do not know which site, though it is a Russian release. The sound texture of the Solaris cd is a favourite to fall asleep to.
I went to see Max and Mary premiere on Thursday, which is a stop-motion animation in the vein of Harvey Krumpet. It a bit disappointing to say the least, though I went into the movie with high expectations. Max and Mary was trying to be too cute in so many ways, like a low brow Amelie heroine meets an Ogre. The way aspergers is portrayed was also very one dimensional. I have to say that it was a nice choice for an opening movie, with most years the opening movie takes its self a bit too seriously. The September Issue was enjoyable and the after-party was more so. The best so far that I have seen is Paper Heart and Afgan Star. Afgan Star is the one movie that I have been hearing the most buzz about. It is a documentary about an Afgani version of American Idol. The movie that I am looking forward to seeing is Rudo y Cursi.
May I suggest that if you are not lucky enough to have hunted down a copy of Last Year in Marienbad that you may want to go onto the literary route with The Invention of Morel which Alain Resnais and Alain Robbe-Grillet used as a model for the movie. It is written by the Argentinian Adolfo Bioy Casares and if that is not reason enough to read this amazing book, the fact that The Invention of Morel was inspired by Bioy Casare’s obbession with silent movie actress Louise Brooks is reason enough.
Cria Cuervos 9/10 Ana Torrent is brilliant, she is like a female version of the young Antoine Doinel, only more psychologically dark and stoic. I have yet to get the song “Porque te vas” out of my head.

Werckmeister Harmonies (Bela Tarr) 100/100. This will be the cinema reel in my mind for what I would rate others for quite a long time.

Why Does Hollywood INSIST Upon Remaking Flawless Films? over 3 years ago
The remake of Andrei Tarkovsky’s genius Solaris as an empty vessel featuring George Clooney was a travesty.
