Who here liked "Love on the Run"? over 3 years ago

Truffaut was not ashamed to make an occasional film that was a bit more of a crowd pleaser in order to pay for some of his more personal projects. Nothing wrong with that considering LOTR was preceded by his most underrated film. the Green Room. LOTR is no masterpiece, but still a charmer. Considering the pace at which he worked and his early demise, we should be grateful for every Truffaut film.

Sex in the movies: Disturbing? over 3 years ago

It’s OK if it’s done with taste and restraint, like Salo.

New to The Auteurs? You Belong Here over 3 years ago

Glad to meet everyone. I arrived here via Criterion like many of you. I hope there is no ageism here, just film lovers. I think my life changed irrevocably when I saw Chaplin’s Modern Times on a big screen in 1972. God save the Village Green.

Final Films by Master Filmmakers over 3 years ago

Yes, yes, yes to Bob Stutsman. Madadayo by Kurosawa is criminally underrated.

Testament of Orpheus-far better than I’d heard, but you’d better like Cocteau and you have to see Orpheus first.

favorite and least favorite godard films over 3 years ago

Trying to rate Godard films is like trying to rate is like trying to rate Renoir or John Ford. There are a few benchmarks and then it’s all conjecture. Anna Karina is the French Maureen O’Hara.

What is Kubrick's Most Under-Appreciated Film? over 3 years ago

Paths of Glory is amazing and underrated. Eyes Wide Shut is crap. People often want to romanticize a “last film.” The Shining was his last major work.

Great Sports Films over 3 years ago

Fear Strikes Out with Tony Perkins and the Babe Ruth Story with William Bendix. Serious sports movies like League of Their Own and Field Of Dreams date instantly. The dumber the better…and Michael Jordan should have kept his hands offa Bugs Bunny.

Melville's best film? over 3 years ago

I think Les Enfants Terribles is a true collaboration and a great film. I read the book recently (a very quick read, by the way), and it only enhanced my feelings of the film as a true collaborative effort.

WHAT IS YOUR PICK FOR THE WORSE MOVIE EVER MADE? over 3 years ago

Star Wars. Worst film ever made. Not only moronic and wretched, but it instigated a sea change and decline in American filmmaking which peersists to this day. Talk about dumb and dumber!

“Let the Right One In” on Halloween. Making the vamp an adolescent girl was brilliant. No more blood and gore than necessary and a truly excellent script. Reminded me a bit of Nosfeeratu in some strange way, all due respect to Murnau.

Criterion's John Mulvaney...fact or fiction. about 2 years ago

I’ve read that Criterion’s customer service guy John Mulvaney is fictional and that Criterion customer service is actually handled by several people. Can any fellow Criterion junkies confirm or deny this rumor?

If he has minions, perhaps that explains why some inquiries are answered quickly and others not so quickly.
