My personal favorite is The Double Life of Veronique. This film absolutely mesmerizes me from beginning to end. The story,
the camerawork and that great musical score by Zbigniew Preisner, all under the great direction of Kieslowski. What a truly
amazing talent this man was and a damn shame no really ever took notice.
Henry Fonda as Frank in Leone’s Once upon a Time in the West. The shock value alone of seeing Fonda shoot the kid on the McBain
ranch deserves a mention on this list.
Definitely Wellman’s Batlleground, Battle of Algiers, but lets not forget Henry King’s Twelve O’clock High. But I also agree with
Mr. JP Belmondo that Saving Private Ryan is a cliche ridden pile of junk regardless of how much they spent on it. Hobbled by wooden
performances, jesse franco zoom quick cut for no reason camera work and I’ll tell you what to feel musical (blanch) score by john williams.
On Dec. 24th a judged ruled that Fox owns the distribution rights to the graphic novel and Warner held no rights to make a film
adaptation. The same judge set a trial date of Jan. 20. We shall see what this all comes to.
Pierluigi Puccini, the hollywood ten were: Herbert Biberman, Edward Dmytryk, Adrian Scott, Alvah Bessie, Lester Cole, Ring Lardner
John Lawson, Albert Maltz, Samuel Ornitz, and Dalton Trumbo. All cited for contempt of congress.
loved run lola run, { have the one sheet hanging in my livingroom }, and while i enjoyed Heaven also i prefer Winter Sleepers. But the man
has never really let me down.
Film scores, I always presumed, should be designed to enhance and compliment the visual experience and act as an emotional cue to an individual scene while also contributing to the whole body of the work. Using this, as my own baseline, John Williams scores I find to be consistently intrusive, horribly simple in their design, never subtle enough to allow you to draw your own inferences, and for some unknown reason they always seem to be mixed to loud.
