I saw it with great curiosity of what it was. Had no Idea about what it was about other that the criterion and the netflix descriptions of it. Will I see it again? Maybe after I read more about the Marquee De salle and see more of Pasolini’s work. Do I regret watching it? No. It is a film for cinema enthusitests must see to see the boundries that could be pushed. I was in my apartment with the lights on watching this film and while I was being further disgusted on what I was seeing on screen I imagined what it would be like to see this film in a theatre with the average audience in attendance that go to these type of films. (“These type of films” meaning foriegn or art house films not snuff films). What type of reactions would the audience be letting out? how many would walk out and when…right when I turned the film off and said I couldn’t take anymore?
It is an interesting film for what it is and what it says…not about the human spirit but about how far we can go now with film.

I wouldn’t call the new indiana Jones flick the worst film of the year when there were so many others that were worse. I would actually enjoy watching Indiana Jones again as what it is a piece of fluff no where near as good as Raiders or Temple of Doom but still far better than say Saw V (this franchise need to stop and stop now…the first one was great but after that it has been a long and steady drop in quality. If I want to see a torture flick…I’d see Salo); Momma Mia, Meet Dave, Jumper, The Love Guru, THe Bank Job, The Onion Movie, (Should I go on?)
In my case the worst movie of 2008 would have to be “The Happening”. Waste of time and probably would have been better without Marky Mark.
It’s amazing that all the overrated directors that we have named so far are all american directors. DOes that say something about american films?
ANyway…I feel that Speilberg is a hack now. He has lost his sense of wow and every film that he does now feels like he is phoning it in.
Tarantino was good in the beginning but I feel that he has referenced one too many 70’s schlock movies. However I still am anxious for every new movie that he directs.
Brian De Palma is just too gimmicky with his camera work. Yes the Camera tilts…make me feel for your characters and the tilting camera is icing on the cake.
Ron Howard is Talentless. Yes he made a Beautiful mind and Splash and Parenthood but he also made A Beautiful Mind, Splash, and Parenthood. Are these really the new classics or are they just oscar fodder and product to get the studios into the black instead of the red?
But I can’t think of one director that has not been named on this forum yet that I feel as being overrated.
Jake What you are doing right now is a great way of learning film. I feel that the more you learn from the masters the more you help this wonderful art form evolve.
A couple of suggestions for you in the world of self taught film school:
Watch Rober Rodrigueze’s special Features for the Mexico Trilogy including all commentaries
Watch Evil Dead 2’s special features (More how to make a film by the seat of your pants)
Read Bruce Campbell’s If Chins Could Kill (A wonderful resource on how to make a film including diagrams)
Read Dov S.S. Siemens From Reel to Deal ( a step by step approach of making a film including how to write a screenplay in 3 weeks)
Read FIlm Directing Shot by Shot ( Helps identify camera angles, shots, and some techniques. Real Dry reading but helpful when writing your shooting script)
it all goes without saying The Criterion Collection offers a wide range of films that definately bring up conversation. I was in DVD Planet today, a DVD mega store which is WONDERFUL if you are looking for a hard to find film (like criterion films) and I was thinking about this thread. Criterion has released some stinkers over the years ( why release "The Brain that Wouldn’t die? twas boring for a 50’s sci-fi flick) But then there is an audience for this film. Criterion strives to offer forgotten films as well as celebrate popular films as well (like the Rock and Armageddon which were bad ass when they were released now not so much) I for one would live to see Criterion delve inot the Poor Forgotten Films of George Pal and possibly even do a edition on Rocky Horror or The Phantom of the Paradise. Not Because these films are as Great as “The Last Emperor” or REvolitionary as “The 400 BLows” but because they have a significant place in the worlds culture just like Armageddon and The Rock and Even Robocop.
However, Criterion also has a rights issue. BAck in the day of Laserdisc, You could pick up the Criterion Edition of Casablance, Citizen Cane, 2001, Blade RUnner, and even Traispotting.because the studios didn’t give a damn about special features. Now in the advent of DVD and BLU-Ray, Studios have gotten the hint that people like extras on their DVD so they release and re-release all films ad nasuem to milk that ever lasting last dollar out of the publics pocket. Are these extras as benificial as Criterion Extras, hardly but also the studios didn’t care about transfers either (and still don’t at this point). Back in the laserdisc days I would easily spend a c-note for a great transfer of 2001 by criterion than spenmd the 50.00 for the MGM counterpart. Why? Because It looked better. and Kubrick authorized the master as well.
Sorry for the long rant but I just wanted to put my two cents in. Don’t bag on Criterion for a couple of DVD’s that you don’t think that they are worth a hill of beans to be included in the criterion collection. SOmebody, somewhere, actually thank criterion because of it and probably would check out more criterion editions because they did such a great job on Armageddon and wondered why the simposn are spoofing something about a case beween the dveil and homer simpson.
Kyle…why judge something that you haven’t seen? Salo is a hard film to watch. I have only seen half of it and then I had to turn it off because I was physically getting sick. However I would not consider it the worst film ever seen.
Honestly if people judge something without experiencecing it, I would have to say that this forum is just as bad as IMDB.
THe Criterion Collection Goal: “A continuing series of important classic and COntemporary films”
WIth that in mind, without reading the essays for Armageddon or The Rock or even The Blob for that matter, I welcome Those three films into the criterion cannon. Because these are important films for their time. Now I only had seen the Rock a year ago and If I saw it when It first came out in the theaters, I would have thought that it was a great action yarn. However now, ten years later, it does lose its luster. Yet these are still fun films and at the time of their release, helped evolve the action genre.
And could I please ask all of you to stop referring to a film as “Sucking Ass”, “Kicking Ass”, or “Blowing” unless we are actually discussing the actual actions in a specific film. These descriptions are better suited for a message board of lesser caliber. Please describe you criticisms with more than two words.
I also would like to nominate The Original “Gone In 60 Seconds” The DVD has new music that really sucks and I would love for Criterion to restore the original music to it. Not only that but it is a true champion of Gurella Filmaking.
Also Zulu…Never seen it but I hear that it is fantastic.
I have made a feature film (avaliable on Amazon.com) called “The 28th Day”. I have also edited some industrial shorts and two features for Crackhorse Productions.
I have made a feature film (avaliable on Amazon.com) called “The 28th Day”. I have also edited some industrial shorts and two features for Crackhorse Productions.
My first criterion Film that I saw was Casablanca. What got me hooked was the way the film looked. Almost no specks, pops, or scratches on the transfer print. (This was before the “wonderful” work of Lowry Digital). It showed me how much Criterion loved film and wanted to preserve it for the ages. It was definitely worth the extra cost.
As for DVD, I think it was either Spinal Tap or Charade…Not sure but both prints were the best that I have ever seen.
I Hated The RING!!!! Yet everybody loves it.
Not a big fan of Excalibur Yet a lot of people like it
Despised Gladiator
Hated Forrest Gump (Thought it was pretentious)
Disliked Kill Bill (Tarantino needs to stop going to anime Conventions)
Not a big fan of Austin Powers (Yet they say Mike Myers is the next Peter Sellers)
I must say Jubilee was the worst film released on the criterion collection. Probably one of the most pretentious art films ever made. Olny redeeming quality is to see Little Nell and Richard O’Brien of Rocky Horror Fame on Screen doing something that is not Rocky Horror Related.

I felt Minority Report was too much like a video game. Didm’t open my mind at all which is what I would like in a sci-fi film.
