i personally read bordwell/thompson, sarris, donald ritchie (for japanese), lanzoni (for french cinema), murphy, and naremore (specifically for acting for cinema).
i read many others, those are just critics i go to often.
the only son – ozu
akira
once upon a time in the west – leone.
the good the bad and the ugly – leone.
chinatown – polanski
bullitt.
the hustler. rossen.
everything is illuminated – schreiber.
le jour sa leve – carne.
buffet froids. – so hard to find, please release this one. tis a gem.
lost in translation. – coppola.
young frankenstein or blazing saddles – mel brooks.
12 monkeys – gilliam.
city of god.
the long goodbye – altman.
y tu mama tambien? – cuaron.
magnificent ambersons – welles.
the happiness of the katakuris – miike.
satyajit ray.
coen bros.
pta.
more naruse
more kubrick.
- the man who fell to earth – i fail to see why somebody decided this needed to be put on film.
- sweetie – interestingly shot/edited, but i don’t remember wanting to care about anyone in this one.
- chasing amy – liked it, just didn’t think it deserves criterion treatment.
- hidden fortress – and i love me some kurosawa; once again, not bad but not top material. (although lucas cited this one as an influence for star wars).
- traffic – good, but severely overrated. benicio del toro reigned over the other performances.
- by brakhage – this criterion was actually too good. i didn’t hate brakhage until AFTER i watched this dvd; the real man is a douche. he systematically destroyed his own reputation as he explained each of his shorts.
- knife in the water – love polanski, but a lot of nothing happened really and the payoff at the end didn’t quite make up for it.
