Films that changed how you looked at cinema over 3 years ago

I am 27, and it wasn’t until about two years ago I discovered “real” cinema. I have always loved Kubrick and Hitchcock as artists and Monty Python. I grew up on horror films ,so I discovered Argento a few years back and was amazed by his work. It kind of opened my eyes to what was out there. The Bicycle Thief shortly after blew me away. Then I watched Sunset Blvd, which opened my eyes to American classics. I loved the cynical darkness of it. This year I have fallen in love with Woody Allen and Bergman, amongst several others who have changed my life in the past year. All I live for now is films. Directors who have moved me greatly recently are Henri-Georges Clouzot and Ernst Lubitsch. To sum things up, I am still discovering films every week that are changing the way I look at film in general and I think I always will. I must say I am astonished no one else listed The Bicycle Thief.

SONGS (MUSIC ) ABOUT ACTORS OR FILMMAKERS over 3 years ago

The Decemberists wrote the songs “Billy Liar” and “The Sporting Life” (Criterion Fans?)

Piebald also has a song referencing Grace Kelly and a album titled " If it weren’t for venetian blinds it would be curtains for us all". A Line taken from Wilder’s Kiss Me Stupid.

Girl Talk isn’t bad, but I think it is the zenith of overrated music.

I would love to see The Heiress and why not some Ford or Wilder films. The Great Silence is also overly deserving I think…

Documentaries over 3 years ago

I agree with lots of films on here. I would like to get some opions on a fictional documentary that I thought was done quite well and a lot of people hate. Werner Herzog’s The Wild Blue Yonder. I don’t think it was the greatest thing I ever saw, but it was a good idea and was carried out pretty well. People seem to think it is the worst thing they ever saw though. I may never watch it again, but I enjoyed it. Did anyone else like it.

Which movies would you like to see on The Auteurs? over 3 years ago

These are some films I would love to see and have a difficult time coming across to rent before I decide to buy. Or are OOP. Whether or not they are worthy of being on here I couldn’t say as I haven’t seen them.

Miracle in Milan and Shoeshine by Vittorio De Sica
My Dinner with Andre by Louis Malle
Odd Man Out by Carol Reed
Spirits of the Dead and Vanya on 42nd Street by Louis Malle
L’Année dernière à Marienbad by Alain Resnais
Four Flies On Grey Velvet By Argento

I really want to see these films especially L’Année dernière à Marienbad. As far as films I have already seen
I would like to see on here, there’s not enough time for those.

Who do you think had it and lost it? When? and Why? over 3 years ago

Woody Allen. I love the man but his new films are rather silly. Heard lots of good stuff about his latest film though, so I will give it a chance. I think Roman Polanski whom I also love is at the end of his line as well.

Favorite Films In Which the Heroes Die over 3 years ago

Whats your favorite films where the heroes don’t quite make it to the end? There aren’t legions of them, so I’m drawn to see what others list.
The first two that come to my mind are The Great Silence and :Le Samourai.

the movies in My Style / Profile Images over 3 years ago

I myself self was extremely disappointed with the choices presented. Almost half of those movies are decent but nothing spectacular in my opinion. I expected there to be a lot of great films there, instead it is mostly films the average quasi eccentric person with a limited amount of knowledge of cinema has listed for there favorite films on myspace. North By northwest and The Kid being the only two that wouldn’t fall into that category.

HITCHCOCK over 3 years ago

I think it is safe to say Hitchcock was the greatest American director. I think that is a more befitting title. You all speak of his films as artistic yet commercial, I guess he is somewhat of a Warhol of the film world. (some humor is involved in that statement)

I also want to add a lot of people despise his comedies and some of his other works of the like. He is also quite frequently referred to by others as the most overrated director. Myself not being one of those people. Is it jealousy towards his success or people just trying to be “cool” by not likening something the majority of people do. Any thoughts or comments about this? Is anyone on here one of those people who do feel this way?

Directors that consistently make terrible films over 3 years ago

Mr. Sweetums, Shyamalan’s past three films I have not really enjoyed. I can’t say The Village was terrible but it was mediocre at least and the beginning of his downfall. Lady In The Water was far from enjoyable, horribly paced, the camera work was lousy, and the characters way of finding there role in the whole thing was done through several terrible plot twist.. I can’t even finish watching his latest work the Happening, it comes of as very thoughtless to me. The main characters are senseless and have no chemistry and there is no twist. I myself liking some Science Fiction (I hate the term Sci Fi) am not a fanatic for the genre as you are. I think Shyamalan made some excellent films while they maybe weren’t for me I still credit him. There is no denying every film attempt recently he has worsened to the point of making boring, poorly done, and uneventful films. You yourself said you were hoping he didn’t show up in this thread, so deep inside you have some notion he belongs here. His only hope left is to write a thriller about a writer who writes really good screenplays, but all the sudden writes terrible ones for no reason and can’t figure out why. This is just my opinion though, as you thinking he is great is yours,

HITCHCOCK over 3 years ago

I wasn’t referring to his birth origin when I called him an American Filmmaker but where a vast majority of his films were made. that is my fault i guess. I love him and am probably more influenced by him that any other director, but I can’t decide between he and Kurosawa. That’s just me being honest..

“Vicky Christina Barcelona” and “Match Point” are the only two Allen films I haven’t seen yet. So I guess I should check “Match Point” out in the near future.

Scorsese fans out there, it's time to unite! over 3 years ago

I love Scorsese and he’s still doing some great work. I believe him to be one of the best directors sill making films and The Departed shows he’s still got a lot of great work left in him. I am a huge fan of all the aforementioned works, but didn’t see much about The King Of Comedy. Which I believe to be some of his best and most overlooked work and one of my favorite movies.
