Tom Alexander: Filmography

A Clockwork Orange

Having recently watched this (for the first time since I was a teenager), I was surprised by how uneven it is. To me, it somehow achieved this mythic status that made it no longer a movie but some sort of timeless work in a category all on it's own - which it kind of is. But it is unforgettable and distinctly it's own, almost devoid of any filmic context or prior influence.

Passion Play

Rank piece of shit.

Barry Lyndon

Slow going but extremely rewarding - brilliant on so many levels. I didn't want it to end. One of the most beautiful films I have ever seen.

The Help

A lot has been said about the suspect racial politics of both the book and this film. While I haven't read the book - I would say the issue seems a little overstated with regards to this slick and well-acted but ultimately mediocre film. Definitely a moving story that I think could have been made into a much more interesting film. Viola Davis is brilliant, but the rest of the cast are all very good.

Waltz with Bashir

Unshakeable, brilliantly designed and fully enveloping film. And when you think it can't get any more riveting -- the last three minutes will shatter you.

Milk

Standard biopic filmmaking, tipped over the edge by a fascinating subject and a truly brilliant performance from Sean Penn.

Slumdog Millionaire

Thrilling filmmaking on every level -- plot does not hold up to any scrutiny and yeah, it's pretty silly -- but if you just go with it, it's exciting and completely captivating.

Sunrise

My vote for the greatest work of silent cinema. It's like it came from another world altogether. Unique -- there's nothing like it.

Frost/Nixon

Surprisingly intelligent and thrilling -- fine straight-up Hollywood filmmaking on every level. Easily the best film Ron Howard has ever made!

Bright Star

Beautiful, romantic, geniunely great period film. Absolutely beautifully acted by everyone. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Police, Adjective

Gripping, hypnotic portrait of a Romanian undercover narcotics officer who has a crisis of conscience when he is ordered to arrest a teenager who smokes hash after school. Solid filmmaking.

Excited

Extremely intelligent and realistic treatment of a character with a massive premature-ejaculation problem. However, the poor production values and loping-along style make it a difficult film to really get "excited" about.

Excited

Fun, loopy comedy, very entertaining but rather forgettable. Jeff Bridges is a total riot and it's hard to believe this is actually a true story. Great final shot.

Vincere

Exciting cinema with magnetic performances from the two leads -- wow. Thrilling, stylish, entertaining and tragic.

The Road

Greatly disappointing -- while it captures the look the novel brilliantly describes, the film falls flat on the screen. We never get the emotional attachment to the characters -- Hillcoat keeps a strange distance to the proceedings. I would have preferred a much more intense experience. Some gripping scenes, and fine performances, but ultimately much less than it could have been.

Up in the Air

Very funny and sophisticated comedy -- smart, mature characters and situations, and Reitman employs a refreshing and breezy style. But just as he did with Juno, he almost blows the third act by feeling the need to wrap up every character plot thread and throw in umpteen pop songs on the soundtrack. Still, the film wraps up with a beautifully touching and actually sad ending.

To Die Like a Man

Very stylish and colourful portrait of a troubled drag queen -- with a very florid Fassbinder style -- but is way overlong and ultimately has little new to say that we haven't seen in many better films. Great performance by Fernando Gomes.

Titanic

Cheesy and banal but thrilling -- and technically pretty stunning. I have to admit, the romance got me -- DiCaprio and Winslet have great chemistry and give excellent performances. The sinking IS an amazing set-piece, no question -- but as a total film, A Night To Remember is much more emotional and involving.

Borat

Goddamn funny and smart -- great satire. Cohen is a physical comedy genius.

Brüno

Very funny -- but nowhere near as satirical or intelligent as Borat -- and the ending sucks.

Greed

Even though it is cut -- it is such a brilliant work -- completely enthralling and hypnotic. As far as I know -- not available on DVD? Such a crime.
