Russian Film about 3 years ago

Mikhalkov is important. Check out:
-Burnt by the Sun
-Barber of Siberia
-Unfinished Piece for the Player Piano (title for Gordon Ackerman’s recommendation perviously)

Then if you want to go beyond these:
-S Legkim Parom (classic New Year’s Tale)
-East/West

Any suggestions on introducing myself with Silent Pictures. over 2 years ago

I saw that it has been posted already, but I would just like to reiterate about The Passion of Joan of Arc. It has amazing accompanying music, it is so surreal. I don’t know if you drink, but the film also goes great with a wine – Beaujolais Villages | Louis Jadot. Check out the review here: http://www.wineandcri.com/viewings.html

Tarkovsky's Solaris or Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey? over 2 years ago

I saw a thread that really just talked about deeper meanings of each film, but I’d love to get a headcount here of which you preferred and why.

Fredo, thanks for the first real answer to my question. I appreciate the other opinions as well, but it’s funny to me that everyone would rather spend so much more time debating why these two can’t be compared than actually having a preference. Sure, it’s a strange comparison – but I like the analysis that is being made, and all I’m asking for is personal opinion.

Josh, I think you are right and I appreciate that. There are many aspects you can compare – and obviously it’s difficult to make any comparison at all, but choice and decisiveness are what make us who we are… and that’s all that I’m looking for here. So far I have really enjoyed the discussion, whether people chose one over the other or not.

@BRUCE – well said about the Joyce bit… and I think that’s a good point.

I also want to clarify the “response” notion now. Tarkovsky only saw 2001 after he had completed Solaris – it was others who said it was the “soviet response to… blah-blah-nonsense-bs.”

One last idea I want to throw out here… does anyone feel 2001 to be pretentious?

Fredo, I like that response… I think I need to approach the film with that in mind.
