My Diner With Andre! Magnolia! All of PT Anderson! Before Sunrise/sunset, Far From Heaven, Ikiru, Dazed and Confused. I thought the green ray was pretty average. There are loads of films, could you be a tad more specific?
Garden State and Eagle Vs Shark were shit. Juno and Little Miss Sunshine were alright but a bit bland. But I do love Wes Anderson, jeunet, Gondry, Napoleon Dynamite, I heart Huckabees etc.
I find a lot of these films have a charm to them that was totally ripped from the French New Wave.
Gangster No. 1, Dead Man’s Shoes, Love Honour and Obey and I guess Lock Stock. Dead Man’s Shoes is the the best though, such a great film, brutally dark though.
Would Eastern Promises count?
Immersion isn’t in anyway whatsoever exclusive to literature, so I do not understand what your point it Matt. Film is the most immersive of all arts in my perspective.
It wasn’t a responce to you. Films are watched(/listened to) on a screen, Literature is read from a book. Pretty simple if you ask me, they are not the same. Collective attributes involved in the creation does not change the fact that you can’t watch a book or read a film. Litrature = Litrature and Film = Film.
To me it’s simple, the fimmaker IS the audience. From that perspective a film maker should never try to satisfy the abstract audience but consider themselves audience enough and make a film that satisfies them. If a film maker has a ‘target audience’ in mind, then I’d call them a hack.
That said I seriously don’t like to have to sit through something that’s gruelling in anyway unless it has a point. Rape seems to just get chucked into films to make the point that they are serious, this pisses me off, I don’t want to have rape rammed in my face unless it has a purpose. Don’t make me sit through some nasty shit for no reason haha.
I probably like them equally, Une Femme is my favorite Godard film though. I really didn’t like Le Mepris, apart from the awesome cinematography (that scene in the apatment, amazing!), music and Michael Piccoli.
I tend to be apprehensive towards U rated films, I’ll still watch them I just tend to assume they wont be great, they have to be pretty inoffensive to get a U. I’m approach anything else on a totally equal level.
British U, I think the system over here works a bunch better over here in general than in the US, minus all the fucking cut dvds and shit, which is annoying.
My absolute favorite film is Jules Et Jim so I’m going to have to go with Truffaut. I have only seen that, 400 Blows and Shoot The Pianist, I have seen a lot more Godard who I sort of love to hate, I find his films very hit or miss, (I really can’t stand Weekend at all). Truffaut’s work is much more consistent and I think generally a better film maker (in what I have seen).
Chase sequences tend to always bore me. If I see Seth Rogan I instantly get filled with rage. Generally I out of hand dismiss most Horror on the basis of my anger at all the stupid cliches.
I hated Clockwork orange, controversial opinion I know.
Man Bites Dog was pretty flipping disturbing, I loved that though – even if I don’t want to watch it again.
As for the animals thing, I watched Weekend again the other day – that’s got a fair bit of nastiness to animals, I hate that film too, not that I found it disturbing or controversial at all.
I seriously do not want to go anywhere near Funny Games or Salo
Films that merit two viewings but lose their luster after that about 3 years ago
Every great film deserves to be watched more than once, if they lose their luster, they’re not great films.

No, not at all. It’s like saying Music = Theatre, they are totally different art forms.

The criticism ‘self indulgent’ should never be applied to film.

I think that it’d be a shit film, I don’t find ‘self indulgent’ a valid criticism. All films are self indulgent, how could they not be.
