The Happening.
Mark Wahlberg’s acting left me looking for something to bludgeon myself with.
And of course, M. Night’s god-awful script and ridiculous storyline didn’t help much either.
I usually don’t bother seeing the movies I know are going to make these lists.
(10,000 BC, Indiana Jones, Mamma Mia!, Disaster Movie, Fool’s Gold, Four Christmases)
Wall E, Let the Right One In, The Dark Knight, Kung Fu Panda, Tropic Thunder
..I should mention that I haven’t seen a lot of new movies this year, so I’ll definitely be adding to this list.
10. Sid and Nancy
9. Ghost World
8. M
7. Female Trouble
6. River’s Edge
5. Casablanca
4. Repulsion
3. Eyes Without A Face
2. Dead Ringers
1. Mulholland Drive
This is nearly impossible, because there are so many films I love and also, so many I haven’t seen.
Wow, Angelo Bombelli, amazing list! :)
I’m the same way, Brian!
I’m not really sure if I can describe how I feel when I watch a truly great film…
If a film manages to effect me on a really deep level, I usually get chills down my spine, and I just have this really cold, unshakable, hollow feeling. But it’s a good thing. :)
I love it. It completely changed the way I see film as a medium, and it’s the only movie that’s ever truly horrified me. The experience of Eraserhead is incredible and indescribable. While I was watching it, I really felt trapped in Henry’s world. It’s like a feverish, hallucinatory nightmare you can’t escape from. I really can’t praise it enough…Some nights, I still wake up sweating and panting after seeing the Lady in the Radiator in my dreams.
Portishead, Ausgang, Simon and Garfunkel, Christian Death (with Rozz Williams), Scarling., Angelo Badalamenti, Goblin, The Dresden Dolls, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Iggy and the Stooges, Johnny Cash, Sex Gang Children, Jimmy Scott, Skip James, Placebo, Oingo Boingo, Roy Orbison, The Cure, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Doors
I would love to have the opportunity to see my favourite films on the big screen, but I loathe going to the theaters in my area because they don’t really play anything that I would want to see, and I can’t stand the collective sound of crunching, chewing, talking, screaming texting humanity. When I go to a theatre I am always reminded why I don’t get out much.
I agree about Atmosphere by Joy Division in the end of Control, that gave me chills. I also get chills when Peter Lorre whistles In the Hall of the Mountain King in M, but I don’t know if that counts. In Dreams by Roy Orbison in Blue Velvet is one of my favourite uses of music in a film ever, Singin’ In the Rain in A Clockwork Orange is also an excellent choice. There are so many instrumental scores that I love that I wouldn’t even know where to start.
River’s Edge, Female Trouble/Pink Flamingos/Desperate Living, Repulsion, Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Big Fish, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, Fargo, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Spider, Ghost World, Hour of the Wolf, Watership Down
Inland Empire, Eraserhead, Suspiria, Eyes Without A Face, A Tale Of Two Sisters, Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, Cannibal Holocaust, Black Sabbath, Evil Dead 2, Dead Alive, The Fly, Dead Ringers, Picnic at Hanging Rock and May are my favourites.
Oh, and that American Nightmare documentary was awesome. :)
Let the Right One In is in desperate need of a new DVD release, already. Goddamn botched subtitles!
I can’t wait to see In Bruges and Synecdoche, New York.
My personal favourites, not necessarily the best: River’s Edge, Blue Velvet, The Fly, Sid and Nancy, Polyester, Stand by Me, The Lost Boys, Near Dark, The Outsiders, Heathers, Weird Science, Videodrome, Dead Ringers, The Elephant Man, An American Werewolf in London, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Rain Man, The Land Before Time, The Neverending Story.
