Contemporary Film Noir over 3 years ago

There’s a new one coming out called Dark Streets that happens to also be a blues musical. I’m not sure if it’s true noir, but it’s definitely an homage.

New to The Auteurs? You Belong Here over 3 years ago

I’m a university student from Texas, Communications major with a minor in Theatre. I guess you could say I’m an aspiring actress of sorts. I’ve done local theatre, but I’m still trying to break into film. I also haven’t had a movie night with a friend in years, since no one I know wants to read subtitles. =)

The last line of Breathless..

“Qu’est ce que c’est “dégueulasse”? (“What is a bitch?”)

Priceless.

Buñuel recommendations? over 3 years ago

Just recently developed an interest in Luis Buñuel. Aside from L’Âge d’or, which is already on my list, does anyone have any recommendations?

The Ballad of Jack and Rose, I would have to say. I never hear it mentioned, but it’s one of my favorites.

Films that changed how you looked at cinema over 3 years ago

I’ve noticed that my answer to a lot of these questions is the same, but I still have to go with Breathless. I was completely floored the first time I saw it.

Guilty Pleasures over 3 years ago

Twilight, kind of. Not so much the movie itself, rather that I really respect some of the actors. I guess the books were more of a guilty pleasure for me than anything, and it was kind of cool to see them brought to life, but they could have found a much better screenwriter. The movie lost a lot of the plot.

I will say this, that film will not be the artistic highlight of anyone’s career.

Top Albums of the Year (aka What rocks your ipod) 2008 over 3 years ago

While not his absolute best album, I really liked Beck’s Modern Guilt. Also, I’ve recently discovered and fallen in love with Johnny Flynn. His first full-length, A Larum, came out in May.

CONFESSIONS--FILMS YOU ARE ASHAMED TO SAY YOU HAVE NOT SEEN (YET) over 3 years ago

So many. I have too many interests. But the most shameful are Notorious, Pierrot le Fou, Five Easy Pieces, 8 1/2, and Seven Samurai.

Who do you read? over 3 years ago

Kerouac, of course. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Rimbaud, Baudelaire, William Blake, Camus, Bukowski, Whitman, Oscar Wilde, Philip K. Dick, Mark Twain, Kafka… Oh god, I could do this for hours.

I’m currently hunting down Salvador Dali’s autobiographies, as well as what I can find by Martin Amis.

Labyrinth. Kind of a guilty pleasure I guess, but it’s just so fun that I can’t seem to feel guilty about it.

Favorite plays turned into films over 3 years ago

Not always the easiest transition, but a few hold up. My personal favorite is Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night.

Breathless is the film that gets a lot of people into Godard, but if you’ve already seen Bande a Part, you probably don’t need an introduction. Still, I have to say I prefer Breathless.

Lars and the Real Girl over 3 years ago

I didn’t have the highest expectations based on the trailer, but I actually loved it. Over the past few years I’ve been really impressed with Ryan Gosling as an actor, and I’m looking forward to seeing the full extent of what he can do.
