About Me

Howdy folks.

Jake Kath is my name and shitting around is my game! I’ve been a movie buff since I was twelve after I watched Annie Hall for the first time. That movie floored me because I didn’t know that movies could tell a story any fucking way it wanted to and also, be a form of expression.

I’ve been told my taste is pretty radical and absurd but I normally have a reason why I love or hate a movie.

My favorite filmmaker is Guy Maddin. His movies embody everything I love about cinema and they inspire me to make my own movies. His movies are exciting, playful, dramatic, funny as fuck, and are completely audacious. He’s a punk filmmaker to the core. He doesn’t give a fuck on what type of camera he uses or how his sets can look homemade because its part of his aesthetic. The conventional flaws to his movies are what separates him. There’s a lot of spirit to his movies that I wished more filmmakers would hone in on!

I’m currently studying filmmaking/animation at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. After school, I aim to work within the industry and probably, will end up working television which sounds perfect to me.

I’m generally a friendly person. So, don’t be a stranger and say hi some time.

Thanks, have a lovely night/day/week/month/year/decade/century/life.

This is what I'm talkin'! 60s/70s horror inspired that isn't ironic. Yes, it's indulgent but its good indulgence. Just cause you're quiet doesn't mean you're effective. I love how loud the movie is. Literally and thematically. Brutal madness. Satanic masturbation. Best time at the movies, that is sure!

Hey! I see you are one of the few fans of Pavilion, and I wondered if you might be able to name a few similar films please? I guess I really like these minimal and contemplative American indie tales, like Exploding Girl, Putty Hill, but I can’t think of many more. Would you be able to share some? Thanks

Hey there! I would check the movies directed by Aaron Katz . "Dance Party, USA", "Quiet City", and "Cold Weather". I wasn't that into Quiet City but you might get more out of it but Dance party and Cold Weather are my shit! I would also check these these two movies directed by Steven Soderbergh, "Bubble" and "Girlfriend experience". They both are executed like the movies stated before but for different effect. Looking into the movie that was a huge influence on "Pavilion", which was "Safe". Might be something you're looking for. "Ballast" has similar qualities but done a little differently. The recent movie, "MUD" actually contains a lot of what you're looking for. And I would also look at "Goodbye, Solo", "Man Push Cart", and "Chop Shop". I hope this was helpful.
