Its actually my favorite Cassavettes.
Most people thought the long scenes of the burlesque acts were tedious but I thought they really added to the dark/cynical tone of the film.
Its a shame Norman McLaren, Ryan Larkin and Arthur Lipsett aren’t listed as Auteurs here.
I think Walking by Ryan Larkin is the best Canadian film. Yes its a short, but it achieves an emotional effect that most feature length film could not.
Never in cinema has so much been achieved, so simply in so little frames. I think its the Zenith of Canadian cinema and it truly makes me proud to be a Canadian Filmmaker.
Night of the Living Dead. Great horror film but with performances out of a grade seven play. It’s kind of the type of movie that can get away with b-movie performances though. Same thing with Metropolis.
Also I think Napoleon by Abel Gance had some pretty unnecessary romantic scenes which seemed to last forever, but aside from that it was true silent cinematic epic that probably even impressed Eisenstein.
Also Umberto D. was great too, but lacked the soul that Bicycle Thief did.
Agreed with Charlotte and D. 2 inches to the left on The Departed. Throughout the whole film I was thinking “I would rather be watching Taxi Driver or Raging Bull”. Total waste of celluloid.
Its to young to die. Music, theater, literature, theses have been around for thousands of years. Cinemas just a baby, it has centuries to go before its matured and can bite the dust.
- When asked who the love of your life is, you answer Monica Vitti instead of the name of your current girlfriend.
Good one bob.
- You perk up when the little white line goes across the screen for the old criterion logo.
- You notice subtle references to films like Metropolis and Holy Mountain in things like music videos and commercials (which goes over everyone elses head).
- Technicolor makes you cry.
- You are determinded to, some day, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but some day, watch The Decalogue from start to finish in one sitting.
- You love the fact that there is a Japanese toy company called “Kubrick”.
Have you ever been at someones house (who is not a cinephile), you start watching a movie and you notice the aspect ratio on there television is set wrong? And to make things worse, you mention the problem and nobody understands what your talking about?
I was watching Psycho at my friends house. She has a widscreen tevlevision and for some stupid reason a movie thats supposed to be 1.85:1 was wider than 2.35:1 cinemascope. This happens at my other friends house all the time too.
One time we were all watching a 2:35:1 aspect ratio movie. It looked more like the 4.00 : 1 (Triptych sequence) in Able Gances Napoleon.
It drives me bonkers. Please tell me Im not the only one.
I offer to change it all the time. They get very defensive. One time I switched it to the proper setting (while they were in the bathroom of course) and they said it looked wrong.

Who do you think the most overrated director is? over 3 years ago
I have someone in mind but, I wont say it for fear of being hunted down and killed like a dog by blood thirsty cinephiles worldwide.
I kind of agree with the john ford statement. The Searchers is somewhat overrated.

It’s an intriguing and extreme metaphor for fascism making it more compelling than other cinematic metaphors?
