“Orson Welles was always embarrassed by Rosebud. “It’s a gimmick, really,” he told interviewers, “and rather dollar book Freud.” The mystery of “the great man’s last words” was, like the reporter Thompson charged with solving it, “a piece of machinery” designed to lead the audience through the fragmented plot. The solution to the mystery is supposed to be that we, like Kane’s friends, lovers, and confidantes, discover that “the great man” is actually hollow inside. There is nothing there — no lost love, no moral truths, no imparted wisdom. “Rosebud” is just a missing piece in the jigsaw puzzle. It has no special value other than that it is missing. Kane the man, like Kane the film, is what Borges called it: a labyrinth without a center.”

Oblivion

Oblivion didn't ~steal~ from any sci-fi film. It used well established genre tropes to create a thinly explored film. If you care about story or characters at all I wouldn't advise you to see this at all. It's a beautiful film to look at and listen to however. Better than the vast majority of recent Hollywood films on a design and staging front, unfortunately the ideas are merely presented and not explored except 1

If only one day fans of movies, both layman and proud cinephiles, would be far more critical about pointless and random violence than a movie with a fair amount of sex.

Side Effects

I guess this is the most appropriate film to end his career on considering it perfectly exemplifies the title of most middlebrow director ever. blah. always good of been more man. always could of been more.

Side Effects

A European country invades and subjects another country to decades of violence and people are concerned with citizens of Algeria being shown as too noble? Fucking absurd man. This obsession with even-handedness and neutrality never serves to help or defend people who need help the most.

“In the army we saw those who considered themselves our masters naked, in tears, some cowardly or ignorant. When a white soldier asked me to write a letter for him, it was a revelation—I thought all Europeans knew how to write. The war demystified the colonizer; the veil fell.”

You set a film in Brasil and the only thing you can offer is that Brasilians like the dance. Lovely.

Nymphomaniac

Ahh yes, a man's idea of exploring sexuality by filming a woman repeatedly getting fucked and then raped and beaten. Covering very new ground it seems.

So, you'd rather explore sexuality by not being confronted with the reality of sexuality? Or do you doubt that some women (or men) get fucked/raped/beaten? Or men aren't allowed to comment on such material with a cynical tone?

Resting on hackneyed examples of women being abused isn't confronting anything. It's revisiting tired misogynistic tropes that solely exist to tantalize male viewers by sexually assaulting women. If Lars wants to explore sexual violence in women's lives he'd actually give her a voice and perspective but his track record proves the exact opposite of that.

I feel von Trier is rather accurate if a bit impressionistic on the truth of the world's collective abuse of the Feminine. He deeply admires Dreyer, who also had a particular view sympathetic and empathetic to women's suffering.

Mr. Trier can make whatever movie he likes even if it is as hollow, simple and retarded as you make it sound. When did you see it? Shit. Must be hard to watch a four hour movie that's nothing but a woman in misery in every respect with no room for a full bodied character with a point of view.

I don't see how people can't clearly see this was a troll job by Sam Raimi because of studio interference forcing Venom on him. There isn't a single serious thing going on in this. How can't people see that?
