If you guys would like any assistance on discussion of Michael Haneke’s films or interview questions, please let me know. I’ve studied all his features multiple times. Thx!
Law, Le Caribinier’s was awesome as far as a war film goes. Most of the other stuff aestheticize it (Saving Private Ryan), as well as CNN and all these crazy reality tv shows set in Afghanistan (shake the camera, throw the audience into the violence so they too can play).
Brian, definitely hate it when my non-cinema friends recommend films, usually turns out disastrous against my tastes.
Berjuan & everyone else: Recent art film called Preparing for Marx which I made in mid December. It’s a rough cut, and I’m taking opinions before going off and doing post-sound work. I sometime miss forum posts, so please send an email, and I’ll send you the link directly after the uploads complete (4 parts because youtube only allows 10 minute films). I uploaded in 1080.
Any introductions that are already complete as far as films go? I pretty much have an idea of how I’ll do mine for Haneke’s Pianist and Cache, but would love to see other peoples’ film introductions.
Just saw War, Inc. with John Cusack. I can’t believe he got a film funded where he showed corporatized soldiers blowing away unarmed civilians…. Even though by most aspects it’s not a cinema film, and certainly does a horrific job portraying those coming from the Middle East, any thoughts on that and the corporatization aspect of war flowing through the main stream (also seen in Avatar)?
I don’t expect much from the Oscars, and the Oscar’s runs in its own little world (of Hollywood mainstream). I’ll just be happy that a film about imperialism wins…
Drew: There’s a government conspiracy preying on special facebook users. :) Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
Saw the documentary on Tickets, and it was really amazing to see how these directors work with their talent, as well as how challenging it was for them to choreograph transitions of story times. Has anyone else seen it?
Else wise, recutting, yet again, making more and more fragmentation of time in my new art film. Tomorrow, Caché, and Caché introduction hopefully.
In meantime, I’m having an artistic crisis as to what my next film will be about. Good gracious.
Manipulative, unnecessarily emotional moving the audience to keep them engaged as opposed to using nuance and sophistication. Shocking the audience into awe. Pulling out tears. That’s my personal opinion.
How about Slumdog Millionaire, win a million dollars so you can then get the girl of your dreams, while the remainder of the society where you came from remains in the slums and cheers for you while they get left behind, the audience forgetting about them as well… Would we say that film manipulates our emotions?
In Antonioni, I feel there is a more deeply seated concern about the world, deeper more meanginful reflection. Perhaps I need to see more Fellini; I’ve watched just about every Antonioni film there is.
Hurt Locker – not a fan. I thought running off base was an attempt to stick to narrative conventions of 1 dimension audience expectations, and the film lost me from there onward. From that point onward, it felt like contrivance (going to dodge some rocks and stones for saying that). The problem I had was that the film started off as portrait of life “over there,” and then turned into Indiana Jones (okay, maybe that’s a bit rough). Does anyone else agree with me?
Casa De Lava (Pedro Costa) – Loved it, gotta watch it again.
I should have some good questions for the Haneke portion. Going to rewatch Piano Teacher either tomorrow or Friday and write introduction by Monday night hopefully. YA!

which sight and sound poll do people respect more: critics or directors or both over 2 years ago
Don’t know if I’m divided between this. I’d have to say, which directors’ perspectives, and which critics’ perspectives.
