Personal All-Time 25 over 2 years ago

In some order, but a very loose one.

Sans soleil (Chris Marker)
Café Lumière (Hou Hsiao-hsien)
My Winnipeg (Guy Maddin)
The Heart of the World (Guy Maddin)
Still Life (Jia Zhangke)
24 City (Jia Zhangke)
In Public (Jia Zhangke)
Vertigo (Hitchcock)
3 Women (Robert Altman)
Walkabout (Nicolas Roeg)
The Sun Also Rises (Jiang Wen)
Tusalava (Len Lye)
Meditation on Violence (Maya Deren)
Mothlight (Stan Brakhage)
The Goddess (Wu Yonggang)
The Mirror (Andrei Tarkovsky)
Solaris (Andrei Tarkovsky)
The Crowd (King Vidor)
Before Sunset (Richard Linklater)
China (Michelangelo Antonioni)
Céline and Julie Go Boating (Jacques Rivette)
Lost in Beijing (Li Yu)
Playtime (Jacques Tati)
Until the End of the World (Wim Wenders)
Goodbye, Dragon Inn (Tsai Ming-liang)

This is my first list of the kind, after just one year of intensive film watching, so the next would be quite (may be) different. Tough choice, because I’m more in love with directors rather than with particular films, and there are so many aspects to films.

Directors' Cup: General Announcements Thread about 2 years ago

@ He raises some good points and I was wondering what everyone else thinks about it? Would anyone not be able to cope if we were to switch to just providing download links?

I’d prefer download links.

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 1: John Carpenter (They Live) vs Gustav Deutsch (Film ist. 1-6) about 2 years ago

John Carpenter (They Live) —0 vs Gustav Deutsch (Film ist. 1-6) —1

I am a biased one – it takes some effort to enjoy action-packed stuff like They Live (even more – from the end of the 80-s) and it takes same effort to be objective about found footage in good hands. I tried both but laziness won.

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 2: Kenji Mizoguchi (The Story of the Late Chrysanthemums) vs D.W.Griffith (True Heart Susie) about 2 years ago

The Story of the Late Chrysanthemums 1 -- True Heart Susie 0

Griffith was very enjoyable, but Mizoguchi was amazing.

Susie’s style suffered from being highly used by mainstream movies, Chrysanthemums have a very fresh feeling (or, should I thank my ignorance about Japanese cinema?).

And a very interesting match. It’s my first cup and just with the 2 rounds I began to feel the unique fun of it.

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 3: Rouben Mamoulian (City Streets) vs Allan King (Warrendale) about 2 years ago

Rouben Mamoulian (City Streets) 0 vs Allan King (Warrendale) 1

Warrendale as a very intimate and immediate experience vs City Streets as one more cinematic experience (and not even in a “my” genre).

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 4: Ermanno Olmi (Il posto) vs Hal Hartley (Henry Fool) about 2 years ago

Il Posto 1 vs Henry Fool 0

My first tough choice. I liked both for distinct intonations, with slight preference of Hartley’s film, but Il Posto stayed in my memory in chunks of life, and Henry Fool, mostly, as cleverly arranged backgrounds and too careful colour schemes. So for neorealism this time, unexpectedly.

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 5: Aleksei German (My Friend Ivan Lapshin) vs João Pedro Rodrigues (Two Drifters) about 2 years ago

My friend Ivan Lapshin 1 vs Two Drifters 0

Both were not really fascinating, for different reasons.

Lapschin is a quality film and with solid acting, dialogs, plenty precious details (I am Russian), but all that didn’t feel seamless and natural, I just stumbled upon one trick after a another, and was glad to reach the end. Two Drifters was easier and more inviting, but too easy – after a couple of weeks I’ve found that not much was left in my memory apart from some Odete’s expressions and doings.

Soldier of Orange 1 vs The Red and The White 0

I couldn’t come to terms with the portrayal of women in both films.

Through and Through (Królikiewicz) – 1 vs Les Raquetteurs (Brault) – 0

The decision may be due to a surprise factor, but cinematography, acting and sound were very impressive.

@Eva Jean, Les Raquetteurs is very appealing, I do hope to vote for Brault in the next matches.

Oh, I thought it would be tough, but never expected that tough. I am with Safe, because of its unique and subtle counter-posing of any possible statements, it hints to so many questions and refuses just as many answers, and yet it’s kind, no cynicism or whatever. The Cloud-Capped Star is cinematically wise, but emotionally very alien to me.

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 9: Jonas Mekas (Diaries, Notes and Sketches, AKA Walden) vs. Jafar Panahi (The White Balloon) about 2 years ago

In theory I am all for Mekas’s filming style, and some sequences did resonate, but on the whole it wasn’t my wavelength, I couldn’t get involved and as a result it felt kind of too much of too fast. Yet I look forward for more Mekas.

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 11: F.W. Murnau (Sunrise) vs José Luis Guerín (Berta's Motives) about 2 years ago

There was (just) a shade of protest in my vote, because Sunrise annoyed me almost everywhere where humans and their interaction was involved, that is practically always, apart from the beginning, tram, city bustle and the like. I felt forced to be overwhelmed, I wasn’t and hated the effect. So many too clearly-cut intense emotions may be too much for some people. On the other hand the aftertaste of Guerín’s film is like that one of a good Chinese tea. I love his feeling of space, time and rythm, his use of sound and imagery (wind was magnifiscent), enjoy this special kind of symbolism and quiet narrative.

@Chasing Butterflies (that astounding passage where a rider-less bicycle races the toy car!)

It looked so simple and unassuming, yet I started to cry.

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 12: Edwin (Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly) vs Michael Winterbottom (Wonderland) about 2 years ago

I can’t make my mind about these two. Both movies seem to be decent, but for me it’s so logical continuation of their traditions (East-Asian weird and British realistic), so esthetically correct, that I can’t really care and ready to vote for any or against any on different grounds.

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 13: John Landis (An American Werewolf in London) vs. Marcel Carné (Hôtel du Nord) about 2 years ago

John Landis (An American Werewolf in London) —0 vs. Marcel Carné (Hôtel du Nord) — 1

For vampires against werewolves! Ok, no vampires in Carné’s story, but what a background and (yes!) an atmosphere! Apart from the main characters and their doomed quarrel with the fate, everything was so warm and gentle(?).

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 12: Edwin (Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly) vs Michael Winterbottom (Wonderland) about 2 years ago

I am as indecisive about these particular films as a day ago, but thought that it would be interesting to see more Edwin (expecting something unexpected) rather than Winterbottom, so

Edwin (Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly) 1 – 0 vs Michael Winterbottom (Wonderland) – 0

If it was just the 2nd part of Mabuse, I could have chosen Lang (at its best), but the 1st was a trial to sit through.
