If you've liked Lunch Break, you should check out Exit, also fantastic!
This was perhaps the most astonishing interview I've ever seen; I could not look away. I feel like anyone interested in the cinema of Rivette, or in the cinema, in general, should watch it, because it would do him or her a world of good. It is the most wonderful of films. Savvy
I did not expect this from Eustache. He was obviously a very smart filmmaker to begin with, but here he is taking and subverting notions on the cinema to produce a dialogue about truth and one's relation to that truth (and to his or her own art), and it becomes an incredible piece of unlikely filmmaking. I can only hope his other shorts are this impressive. Savvy
Cinema that grabs you, shakes you, and doesn't let you go - it almost hurts. What an astonishing film. Savvy
Discovery through depth, distance, motion, and slowness. This movie gave me one of the most astonishing journeys I've had watching a film. It serves as a key to all movies, in how everything is revealed to us through cinematic technique. Savvy
Fassbinder meets Kafka. This mammoth film attempts to logically depict the devastation of one individual within himself, and as he exists in the world around him. Not often have I seen a film that runs so highly through rationale, so clear-headed through the state of things in the world, and how they affect the individual; Fassbinder gave us everything he knew, and we can only be grateful. Savvy
Sometimes I think that Hong Sang-soo knows me better than I know myself. Wait...who am I kidding? He DOES know me better than I know myself... Savvy
Storytelling through revelation - what an astonishing film. For a while, I thought that, if Liu cut, and if we saw who was building the story, the film would be ruined. But she does open it up, and in the most beautiful way possible. It is a film that speaks very strongly about the way films are made (it'd probably make a good companion piece to Apichatpong's Mysterious Object at Noon). Amazing. Savvy
That was one hell of an ending! Savvy
Every time I put on another Naruse film, I'm just waiting to be disappointed. That has still not happened yet. I am...that was devastating. Savvy
Naruse is a master of the camera, and of the edit. He just...he just gets it right virtually every time. Wow. Savvy
Oh my God. Antonioni...thank you. Savvy
How in the hell did I mistake this for a piece of shit? That...that was amazing. Savvy
a.k.a Dark Side of The Red Balloon Savvy
Loznitsa seems to be one of the only filmmakers who is intent on (often) showing us hell on Earth. The tiresome repetition that the workers face in this dehumanizing factory seems to suggest a cyclical, almost never-ending struggle. It reminds me a lot of what he did in Train Stop, another brilliant film. Savvy
I don't ever want this movie out of mind. Costa continues to astonish with this expressionistic document of an artist and her craft. The film is an astonishing piece of work; would that I might one day make something half as fascinating and rich as this. Savvy
Ugh! I seriously want to see this! Savvy
One of the most insightful films about what cinema is and how it can be used that I have ever seen. Really a masterwork by Monte Hellman. Savvy
Finished watching this for the third time tonight. This movie is everything. It is as though Edward Yang took everything he had ever felt about life - everything he had learned from his experiences, and from those around him - and fashioned it into a deeply felt emotional ride. Life, death, heartbreak, joy - everything is here, and it is handled so delicately, with such care and compassion. Thank you Edward Yang.
Oh wow! I've seen this! Way back in eighth grade, my science teacher made us watch this. Wish I had known anything about movies back then. As much as I enjoyed it, knowing who Dieterle was would have helped. :P Savvy
Best Tony Scott movie. Well, that and Domino, but yeah... Savvy
Absolutely incredible. Shindo hit this one out of the park with a magnificent story of - well - life. There it is, and there it goes. Savvy
Oh my gosh, what a wonderful film! Takahata is a master of so much, and here, while utilizing a different style and tone than many of his other films (that I've seen, anyway), he is able to get away with a story that is both heart-warming, and yet incredibly truthful. I wish there could be more films like this around. Savvy
Okay, I just watched this, but there is no way I can rate it, as, sadly, my mind was all over the place during the viewing. I'll watch it again soon. Savvy
Does anyone know where this can be found? I've (okay, my friend has) scoured the internet, and I can't seem to find it anywhere. I want to see this damn film! Savvy
This is odd for merely logistical reasons. I mean, there's no way we wouldn't know about that new planet, and if it was coming toward the Earth, even if it was only so far away, it would begin screwing with our gravitational field so fast. And it looks a lot like Antichrist. Still, I'm very intrigued. Savvy
To be fair there have been several studies that suggest that a collision with another planet can indeed happen, never mind the hypothesis that that was how our moon was formed. Scientists have also found Earth like planets near to our planet after years and years of observation. Of course this is Science Fiction we are talking about, and it is Trier and not Roland Emmerich.
If there is a more delightful film to witness, then I have yet to see it. Absolutely enchanting, and just incredibly fun. Miyazaki rocked this one out of the park. Savvy
That was really something special. A wonderful film about the parallels of art and life, and the obsessions that drive us all. This is, that I've seen, the best Satoshi Kon film, and I am grateful, as always, for his ability to always construct new ways of storytelling (even when those ways go haywire, as in Perfect Blue). What a fantastic director, who is and will continue to be missed. Savvy
I don't want to speak too soon, but this might possibly be the greatest film I've ever seen. Savvy
Holy shit, this is amazing. Savvy
Tough filmmaker, but one who is incredibly fascinating. I don't know too many filmmakers who portray what he portrays with the level of skill and sophistication which he possesses. Very cool. Savvy
