HAMMER FILMS for Criterion about 3 years ago

I’m a huge hammer and fan but I don’t see the point of a criterion release for any of them. I should clarify this as most people want them released in glorious colour, however I grew up watching films on a tiny TV in my room using a rubbish video player so I have never really been interested in high quality sound or colour (blasphemy!). I look mainly at the extras when deciding what criterion DVD’s to buy and already a lot of Hammer DVD have comentaries. Due to the fact the fact they were pretty much all made by the same people in the same places there is alot of repetition on them. I don’t think a criterion release would add much intersting to the films but if, unlike me, you are intersted in how good it looks or sounds, then I guess that would be the only reason. I’d expect all the delected scenes have been lost to time and we will never see them.

Eclipse about 3 years ago

I would like to see an eclipse release of Abbas Kiarastami (sp?) films. The criterion taste of cherry is pretty vanilla and most of his films speak for themselve that you don’t need extras. Plus loads of them aren’t availible.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Why? about 3 years ago

Not having seen the film I have no opinion as to whether it should be released on criterion. However since this thread discussing it is the only one directly linked to the DVD information I do object to people saying to let this thread die and continue it on another one. I’m probably in the minority but when getting other people’s opinion about a film in the CC I find it easier to to the link at the bottom rather than trawling the forum or searching for it. Bfore the websitte got all changed around I would go straight to the relevent page discussing a particular DVD and use that to help inform my decsion ( I got fishing with John on the basis of comments and am very pleased that I did). The new website should make this easier but not if the best place to discuss a film is moved.

Picture quality about 3 years ago

I’m half way through watching this film and whilst I am enjoying the film, I have been very disappointied with the picture quality. It is very dark and often hard to see. I wondered if anyone else had this problem as it doesn’t appear as if Crtierion has done much to improve the image.

Sorry if I’m being stupid Fo Realli. I found your rguement interesting and well argued, even if I disagree with some aspects of it, but are you saying BB is one of the films that you like the film challenges soical barriers or because it goes against the trend of the CC and doesn’t do thisd. I’ve not seen the film and in all the arguement for and against it’s inclusion I found yours most intersting ,probably because I don’t understand all of it:).

How can I tell if my copy is real or bootleg? over 2 years ago

I’ve just bought Flesh for Frankenstein from a reputable Amazon market place seller (can’t remember name but I’ve bought loads of stuff from them). The price was a very cheap £20 and I strongly suspected it was a bootleg. When I got the DVD it was sealed and the plastic wrapping seemed old as if it had been sealed for a few years. I’ve trawled the internet to find ways to identify bootlegs but can’t find much about Flesh. I’ve also seen reference to serial numbers but again nothing about Flesh for Frankenstein. Any help please?

What about the teaser? I assume it’s something on blue ray that’s already in the collection on DVD. If not how about company of wolves?

No Criterion for Internationals? over 2 years ago

I’ve got all mine new from Amazon.co.uk marketplace. Touch wood I’ve rarely had a problem and when I have they’ve always been sorted out. The prices are always pretty good, especially when the pound was strong against the dollar. I also bought from the Barnes and Noble 50% sale and had no problems there either.

Canadian Criterions over 2 years ago

Apologies if this has been posted before but I purchased traffic criterion through Amazon market place and whilst the front cover looks right the spine has an Alliance Atlantic Logo and the back has a 14a Canadian video rating. I’ve never seen any other Canadian criterions and just wonder why it’s like that.

Harry Long, I stopped at the hound of the Baskervilles as I’m not a fan of the man who could cheat death, although I’ve only seen it once. Looking at his filmography again I’d also say
the devil rides out – one of my fav Hammer films
Frankenstein must be destroyed
frankenstein and the monster from Hell – My 2 fav Hammer Frankenstein’s

I think I need to see more of his non hammer work to see if I can extend it even more.

CRITERION UK? over 2 years ago

II wouldn’t worry about customs too much. I’ve bought around 100 dvd’s from america and only been charged by customs once, for the Eisenstein sound years and that may be because it came in a big box. Mind you I am now worried about The Rosselini war films being charged….

Unsung Criterions about 2 years ago

I’ve spent the whole morning watching Young Mr Lincoln and all it’s extras. I bought it as I was on a Ford bender at the time. I’ve not heard much discussion about it, basically, a very good but less well known John Ford film.

I really enjoyed the film but was more impressed by the extras. Despite it being a 2 disc effort they were’nt that many. However I enjoyed them al.. The Omnibus narrated by Lindsey Anderson about earlt ford was great Fonda’s interview with Parky was fab. The short audio interviews also added something. Ford giving a story about how he first met Henry Fonda and then Fonda saying it’s all a lie (plus him finally using the language that he teased in the doc and the Parky interview that Ford said to him when Fonda initially refused the part). On top of that the radio version of the film being availbile as a mp3. Overall it’s a couple hours of extras that add something.

Are there any other unsung Criterions out there? Not the 5 star classics or the cult films chock full of extras. I’m thinking of good films with solid, interesting extra that don’t take forever and a day to go through.

is watching a film on youtube acceptable viewing almost 2 years ago

Having grown up watching films taped off tv on a dodgy video and a TV screen about the size of a laptop its no issue for me. In fact I virtually never go to the cinema now to watch a film because for me seeing something on a big screen with fancy sound isn’t worth the money cinemas charge. I’d much rather pick up a cheap DVD and watch it on my laptop.

@Mark

My name has nothing to do with my cinema preferences, it’s just a name someone called me once that I liked and use for pretty much everything. If it had anything to it had anything to do with cinema however it would not be in the least bit ironic. I fthe name for you implies tradition then my film watching tradition has always been watching film from the comfort of my own home. When I was young I did use to go to the cinema but I honestly can’t remember the first film I saw at the cinema. Neither can i remember any particularly memorable cinema experiences as a child, save for one I had when I saw Karate Kid 2. However I still remember with joy the Christmas we got our first video player and watching Star Wars on it. I have a lot of other memories linked to watching a film on video. In my teens I used to do a paper round and I spent my money on a video player in my room. It didn’t matter that the TV I had was rubbish. When we got sky with all the movie channels I pretty much used to tape a film a night.

I have seen quite a few ‘classics’ at the cinema but didn’t feel the experience was ’special’. Virtually all of the films I’ve seen have been on video, and now computer (as I type this I’m watching an Awful Coffin Joe film on the top right of my screen). I’m not denying that cinema is a more immersive experience. It certainly can enhance a film but not enough for me to feel i have to see a film at a cinema. The only reason I go nowadays is if it’s a film I really want to to see.

Which gwts me to another reason I don’t watch films at the cinema. I’m more interested in seeing one classics than going to see a new film. There are so many films in the last 100 years or so that I am much more interested in seeing. I also dislike how a lot of modern films (at least the blockbusters) tend to be well over 2 hours. I am oldskool in my believe that 90 mins is generally perfectly fine.

The final reason is cost. I live in England and probably and I probably live about half an hour from the nearest decent cinema. About 1o years ago I used to go to the cinema lot. It could cost less than £4 to see a film. DVD was still expensive and video was becoming obselete so the best way to see new film (IMO). Now it seems closer to £7 and very hard to get deals. I’m of the believe that blu-ray wont catch on and we’ll skip to download as the next step for buying film so at the moment I’m perfectly happy buying DVD”s. Most films can I want to see be picked up for £5 max, often with extras. I’d much rather pay a fiver for something permenent. Also I subscribe on and off to lovefim, usually when they offer 3 months for the price of 1. It costs about £18 and I watch about 15 films a month through it. So I watch 45 films for about £18.

There you go three reasons why I don’t bother with cinema; tradition, not buying (completely) buying into the whole ‘experience” and cost.
