La Dolce Vita
The Dekalog
Aguirre, The Wrath of God
The Rules of the Game
Casablanca
The Godfather and The Godfather Part II
The Seventh Seal
Raging Bull
Los Olvidados
Ugetsu
Citizen Kane
Children of Paradise
Vertigo
Weekend
Jules and Jim
Lawrence of Arabia
The Thief of Bagdad(1924)
Seven Samurai
The Passion of Joan Of Arc
Persona
Roger Ebert for introducing a variety essential films in his great movies list, and Rosenbaum for a more expansive point of view in international cinema
New German cinema
the Mexican golden age of the 1940-50
the fifth generation film makers from china
the New Hollywood of the late 1960’s and 70’s
the Czech new wave
Any one interested in films should consider the essays of Roger Ebert . It will open your eyes and help rethink on your opinions on a certain film and maybe help you appreciate it even more. His great movies list is a fascinating way to explore and expand your knowledge of the cinema. He made it easier for me to appreciate movies and give second chances to films I neglected or just didn’t understand. It would be a privilege to meet him and watch a movie with him.
Aguirre,the Wrath of God(Werner Herzog)
Casablanca (Michael Curtiz)
The Decalogue (Krzysztof Kieslowski )
La Dolce Vita (Federico Fellini)
Floating Weeds (Yasujiro Ozu)
The Godfather (Francis Ford Coppola)
Los Olvidados (Luis Buñuel)
Raging Bull (Martin Scorsese)
The Seventh Seal (Ingmar Bergman)
Weekend (Jean-Luc Godard)
I would recommend getting THE DECALOGUE through amazon it only cost like $50 or so and you would still be able to keep you’re $30 gift card and get yourself a new RE-release of THE SEVENTH SEAL or MARIENBAD, and since your planning on getting it until June I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to get a little bit more money by then in case $80 is not enough.
As for the Bergman trilogy I think that one cost around seven dollars more than THE DECALOGUE (trough Amazon)
Hopefully I helped with your dilemma.
These scenes don’t really make me cry but they do get my eyes watery:
the telephone conversation in the Diving Bell and the Butterfly with Max Von Sydow as the father
The last seen in Late Spring
The ending of Umberto D
The Passion of Joan of Arc when she sheds her first tears(which was strange because I didn’t felt that way the first time I saw it)
Oh and a lot the close-ups from Casablanca man are those something, just the way they look at each other towards the end…
that’s all i could think of for now.
