This is Shooting Wall:
Shooting Wall is a revolutionary cinematic organization started in Philadelphia, PA. With its own
magazine being the central theoretical organ. Its aim is to embolden filmmakers and film theorists who
assert theory that work towards “film truth.” To create cinematic soldiers, preparing for a coming war
to assert a criterion for the cinematic. This criterion:
Film is a visual medium.
Film is an auteur-based art.
Film is not reality.
Shooting Wall believes in theoretical unity, which in turn will help fortify film theory’s strength and
regain the ground it lost. We will not be hindered by ideas that have already been proven as failures.
Academia that doesn’t advance film theory and anti-cinemas that deride without rationality will be
denounced. We believe that there are weapons specific only to cinema which we take hold of through
advancing film theory and engaging it in praxis. We arm ourselves with these weapons in a desire to
save cinema and if there is to be a war, it is between those of us who use the weapons and those who do
not.
Cinematic Revolution:
The times are dire, cinema that employs an understanding of film form has slowly disappeared due to
failings of film theory. Shooting Wall aims to regroup and restrategize, rebuilding theory and criticism
from the point it lost influence, as to have an immense impact. Film’s importance, if not reanalyzed and
asserted through new viable theory and then engages in new forms of praxis, will lose its position as an
art. With unity, movement towards rebuilding film theory will occur, we will then have a formidable
and persistent foundation. This unity will be built through the magazine, through propaganda, violent
protest, through the aid in creation of and support for cinema that follows Shooting Wall’s criterion.
Filmmakers, theorists and critics, Shooting Wall is insisting you need to start taking film more
seriously. We are proposing that you join us in becoming a cinematic militant, leaving your homes for
the front to make cinema a way of life, and not allowing complacency to be an option. We are starting a
war, the line in the sand is drawn, which side will you join?
We can proclaim then only this to our enemies: FILM THEORY IS NOT LOVE, IT IS THE HAMMER
WITH WHICH WE USE TO CRUSH THE ENEMY.
