“Hoosiers” set in India. Incredibly boring and derivative.

Reservoir Dogs – a string of “F” bombs isn’t my idea of creative dialogue.

WHICH DIRECTORS...NOT...CURRENTLY REPRESENTED IN THE CRITERION COLLECTION DO YOU WANT TO SEE INCLUDED? over 3 years ago

Jacques Rivette — Celine and Julie Go Boating especially.

I’ll also second Satyajit Ray. U Cal. Santa Cruz finished an extensive restoration but Sony owns the rights and seems more interested in releasing “Paul Blart – Mall Cop” than a top twenty director. A pox on them.

Who do you think the most overrated director is? over 3 years ago

Someone tell Wes Anderson that a lot of us have read Salinger and Wes hasn’t improved on it.

Also Wes wants his daddy – who cares.

Do great films have to be depressing and bleak to be great? over 3 years ago

Ah the 400 Blows isn’t bleak when you realize Antoine went on to become moviedom’s first slacker.

And a darn funny one he was.

Pick a Wes Anderson film. Any Wes Anderson film.

“I want my daddy”. Shut up, Wes. We get the point and a lot of us have read Salinger.

Bore me later.

What films would you like to see included in future ECLIPSE releases? over 3 years ago

There are certainly a number of neglected director’s out there but none has been treated as shabbily as the great Satyajit Ray.

The Apu Trilogy and The Music Room at the very least, please.

Museum of Fine Arts – Godard festival coming up

The Brattle in Harvard Square – lot of variety saw a fresh print of The 39 Steps recently

Harvard Film Archive – also very good variety. Recently had an Oshima retrospective

The Coolidge Corner – Very eclectic generally interesting programming.

What's so wrong with well done manipulation? over 3 years ago

Well look at two shots in the film. The initial elevated shot of the expanse of tin roofed slums and later the nondescript pit of high rises. What happened to the poor? Did they all hit the lottery? Sorry, there’s a real vulgar dishonesty there. Let’s call this for what it is, “Hoosiers” set in India. And if he tilted the camera one more time ….

Appreciation over 3 years ago

I’ve enjoyed any Bresson film I’ve seen. Particularly “A Man Escaped”, “Balthazar” and “Country Priest”. He deserves some mention for his expressive use of sound, especially in Lancelot. New Yorker films had the rights to several of his films and let them go out of print for some reason (along with L’Atalante, Weekend and some other “big” titles). Hope someone is picking them up.

April 2009 Criterions over 3 years ago

I would have picked some of the earlier Oshima like “Death by Hanging”. The Frears is okay but nothing to get excited about at that price point. Painleve? Looks like a real sleeper. No Marienbad. No La Jour Se Leve. Alas.

1. Have you seen this film?

Yes

2. If yes to one, do you believe that this film should be released by the Criterion Collection?

No, there is currently a reasonably good print available and I would rather Criterion focus on unreleased films.

3. If yes or no to two, why do you do you believe this film is worthy of a Criterion release?

Yes

“Experiment in Terror” Blake Edwards directed. Glenn Ford, Lee Remick, Ross Martin.

Terrific finish with a chase threw Dodger Stadium. I point it out because it’s completely overlooked and has real substance.

movies that shake you to the core over 3 years ago

The Vanishing is profoundly disturbing.

Band of Outsiders has always been troubling in a different manner. Godard’s little lecture about how pop culture is corrupting. Maybe not as strong a film as Masculine/Feminine but of all his films it’s best at reminding us what a bunch of damn naive fools we were in the 60’s. Transforming.

Umberto D. Can’t watch it again.

Wes Anderson being considered a competent film maker is also profoundly disturbing.

Dreyer Recommendations over 3 years ago

You may find the rest of his work dissimilar to Vampyr.

Keeping with the Gothic theme “Day of Wrath” would be a logical next step.
I’ve seen that box set around for a good price and it is essential.
