Surprised to see the hate for Brazil. I love that film. I don’t care for Chasing Amy, Armageddon, Fiend Without a Face, Alphaville. I love Truffaut but have never warmed to Jules and Jim. Also have never liked Jacque Tati.
Bob Dylan’s Tell Tale Signs
David Byrne & Brian Eno’s Everything that Happens Will Happen Today
Lucinda Williams Little Honey
Calexico’s Carried To Dust
Ray Davies Working Man’s Cafe
Alejandro Escovedo’s Real Animal
Jim White’s Transnormal Skiperoo
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds’s Dig,Lazarus,Dig
I rarely walk out on films but recently four of us went to see Happy Go Lucky, And we all left about an hour in. Could not bear to suffer the main character any longer. And I’m a fan of Mike Leigh. I know critics love this film but different review sites seem to indicate it’s either a luv it or hate it movie. Lots of A’s and a lot of F’s- very few C’s.
Psycho, Chinatown, Goodfellas.
There are a lot of movies I love but still feel flawed. The Searchers for example:the poor casting of Jeffrey Hunter-bland actor.
The Coconuts is readily available in The Marx Brothers Box Set-The Silver Screen Collection. Laurel and Hardy deserve better than what’s out there-need to restore their early work such as what has been done for Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton. Criterion tends towards films which have a drier sense of humor such as Jacque Tati(I have yet to so much as crack a smile while watching one of his dull films).
Trainspotting has a great use of music. And recently Guy Ritchies use of music in RocknRolla works very well. Always loved Morricone’s score for The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and The Mission.
Coen Brothers-Millers Crossing & The Hudsucker Proxy
Oliver Stone-U Turn
Stanley Kubrick-Barry Lyndon
Michael Mann-Collateral
Don Siegel-Charley Varrick
10,000BC, The Happening, Diary of the Dead and Day of the Dead were all pretty bad. The worst in my opinion was Rambo. Bad writing, bad direction, very bad acting and Stallones human growth hormone enlarged head. The people in the theater were all laughing everytime someone’s bullet ridden head blew up with bad cgi.
Joe-The movie you are referring to is The Killer Shrews(actually badly disguised dogs). Repulsion is a great movie but a British release. I would go with Rosemarys Baby, Exorcist, Frailty, The Stepfather, Invasion of the Body Snatchers,The Fly, The Thing, Carrie. Not sure if Don’t Look Now is an American or British film. Hate Blair Witch Project-it did nothing for me. 90 minutes of looking at someones shoes. With a flat ending.
love David Lynch but have watched Inland Empire twice now and can’t warm up to it.
Vincent Gallo and Harmony Korine have never showed any talent. And Rob Reiner who started out okay with Stand By Me, Say Anything, Spinal Tap and Misery hasn’t made a good film in years.
I love Rushmore and The Royal Tannenbaums.Bottle Rocket I haven’t seen for a long time & don’t remember well. I thought Life Aquatic had some problems and I disliked Darjeeling Express. I never found the brothers to be believable characters.
I haven’t seen Milk yet. Saw Paranoid Park last week and hated it. I love Drugstore Cowboy and To Die For. Found Gerry impossible to get thru and disliked Elephant and Last Days. I do admire him for not making safe films but this doesn’t always mean good films. Years ago I was at a free advance screening for Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. By the half way point only a handfyul of people remained. Terrible movie but given the source material it should never have been made into a film.
Lot of good stuff if you look hard enough. Shows like The Wire, Homicide, Deadwood, True Blood, Carnivale, The Sopranos, Extras are all better than most films.
Length doesn’t bother me. A movie should be as long as it needs to be. Some 3 hour movies fly by and some 90 minute movies drag. A lot of movies have suffered by trying to tell a story in too short a time.
Barry Lyndon easily. The Killing is also pretty good but awfully similar to The Asphalt Jungle. I hated yes Wide Shut when it first came out and recently gave it a second chance. Still hate it.
The Wire-perhaps the best TV show ever
Homicide
Carnivale
The Sopranos
The Brotherhood
Dexter
Twin Peaks
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Seinfeld
Six Feet Under
X-Files
Rome
Simpsons

Kevin Smith. He’s been making movies for well over a decade now and still has no idea what to do with a camera.
