About Me

SCTV movie reviews
I’m not hear to smooth things over, but to blow things up

Confessions of a Film Geek

My own film ratings are on Criticker as Enygma

“I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, de-briefed, or numbered. My life is my own.”
The Prisoner

Der Himmel über Berlin – Wings of Desire

The First Elegy
Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the angels’ hierarchies?
and even if one of them pressed me suddenly against his heart:
I would be consumed in that overwhelming existence.
For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we are still just able to endure,
and we are so awed because it serenely disdains to annihilate us.
Every angel is terrifying.
And so I hold myself back and swallow the call-note of my dark sobbing.
Ah, whom can we ever turn to in our need?
Not angels, not humans, and already the knowing animals are aware
that we are not really at home in our interpreted world.
Perhaps there remains for us some tree on a hillside, which every day we can take into our vision;
there remains for us yesterday’s street and the loyalty of a habit so much at ease
when it stayed with us that it moved in and never left.
Oh and night: there is night, when a wind full of infinite space gnaws at our faces.
Whom would it not remain for—that longed-after, mildly disillusioning presence,
which the solitary heart so painfully meets.
Is it any less difficult for lovers?
But they keep on using each other to hide their own fate.
Don’t you know yet?
Fling the emptiness out of your arms into the spaces we breathe;
perhaps the birds will feel the expanded air with more passionate flying.

Glad this is finally in the database. Although there is no link to it below, here is a thead that deals with the film (awkward title and may be a bit hard to find): "Films That Are Never Talked About Here But May Be Worth a Look Anyway: About Enchanted Cottage":http://mubi.com/topics/films-that-are-never-talked-about-here-but-may-be-worth-a-look-anyway-about-enchanted-cottage

well, oxy, i gotta say, 'io island' was fun but no way it shoulda beat 'shadow of a doubt'. as i suspected there is often politics at play in these events. seemed like a lot more tension in that cup, ha! but also a lot better turnout. maybe they came for the fights? i voted in only a few matches toward the end of that cup

    I agree, Ruby - and not just 'cuz Hitch is one of my favorites. Yeah, a lot of 'politics' in that Cup - why I avoided DC #2! It seems arguments=good turnout sometimes, eh?

Glad to follow you, and happy to see that although we may disagree on the merits of a particular film it can be discussed in an open thoughtful manner!! I can now see why this cup may be getting you down after seeing your last few ratings!!! From the matches coming up I would recommend The Shoe and Palms, both from former Soviet nations and lovely camera work. Both very different in tone though.

tks for your comments on Amelia! your point "... he was often inclined to swing his cinematic angel wings around in ways that could destroy them through his over-exuberance and tendency to excess in the pursuit of his vision" so apt. I was watching his Mahler before and that kept on happening:):)! Pretty Village was quite good I thought, overblown as has been observed but deliberately so in the pursuit of making a symbolic gesture
