Wasn’t Lagaan nominated for best foreign film back in 2001? Or is that not “genuine” bollywood either? I watched it in History class. God I wish all I did in school was watch films.
I’m not sure if it’s all time material but my favorite film of this year by far was Rachel Getting Married. It was such a wonderful story and reached far beyond Anne Hathaway. Honestly, probably the most beautiful display of an interracial relationship I have ever seen.
Sic Transit Gloria.

Also, I just want Bill Murray to be my best friend.
Rushmore
Magnolia
Lost in Translation
Mahattan
Fargo
The Science of Sleep
Adaptation.
Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory
Amelie
Little Miss Sunshine
I know, I know. My list is fairly current but I’m fifteen so I’ve only been alive for that many years of movies anyway.
It seems as though almost everyone on these forums is in love with Kubrick’s last film, Eyes Wide Shut, so naturally I wanted to see it. Anyway I picked it up at blockbuster but the cashier guy wouldn’t let me rent it because he said it was esentially a 2 hour porno. I tried to explain to him that I am not at all vulnerable to corruption and that I’d already seen Requiem for a Dream and Boogie Nights and the Shining and a whole lot of Todd Solondz films, so my age is not exactly a factor (I’m 15 by the way), but I don’t think he had a problem with me renting any R rated movie, he just seemed to object towards this one. ANYWAY, I just want to know what exactly he means by all this. I’m pretty tough when it comes to filmsI don’t get effected easily. So what’s the deal with this film is it really that disturbing?
Wow thanks for all the feedback everyone. I really hate the rating system too, some R ratings are entirely uncalled for. Supposedly if you use the f-word twice it’s an automatic R rating which is just silly. Anyway, my parents are pretty liberal about my film choices, I’m only really not allowed to see The Exorcist or Clockwork Orange until I read the book. Everything else is fair game and my dad was with me at the movie store so I totally could have rented Eyes Wide Shut “legally” but the clerk seemed alarming conscerned with the content. Weird, but it sounds like all of the disturbing elements of this film are only disturbing if you are unable to appreciate the artfulness of it. Correct? Oh well, maybe I’ll just hold off on this one for awhile. Perhaps it’s a sign. Or indication that I should just cave in and finally get netflix.
I think it’s stupid the whole rating system. Nobody can argue that viewing some god-awful PG-13 movie is truly more suited than a film that happens to be rated R and makes you think or challenges your views. It’s those films that truly have negative impacts on youths; they teach them to act entirely superficial, self-centered, and boring, thus taking advantage of their obliviousness. Now that is exploitation in my opinion. If watching too many films is going to grant me unrealistic expectations on love and life, I want it be done by someone like Michel Gondry or Wes Anderson rather than some entirely tateless teen romp.
I really like American Beauty, it’s dark and deep and sexy, but also incredibly moving. The bag in the wind scene and Ricky Fitt’s commentary on beauty in life still gives me the shivers every time.
The Science of Sleep. I love Eternal Sunshine too, but The Science of Sleep is the total Gondry Package. Eternal Sunshine is fantastic, in large part, and probably just as equal of a part, because of Kaufman. Yet, I watch Science of Sleep when I’m in the mood for Gondry, and Adaptation. when I’m in the mood for Kaufman (I think it’s pretty clear that that movie couldn’t be any more of a Kaufman film). And alas, I watch Eternal Sunshine, when I’m in the mood to watch Eternal Sunshine. If that makes any sense.
positive self-esteem in young women, oh god. What am I supposed to watch for that? Steel Magnolias? yuck, yuck, yuck. I’ll watch Blue Velvet over that any day.
I quote Rushmore off the yin yang.
for example…
If someone tries to tell me I’ve done something wrong I’ll ask, “can I see some documentation on that please?”
or if social class is brought into the equation I’ll swear, “I’m no elitist”
or if someone tries to reason with me I’ll say, “it crossed my mind that you might consider that a possibility, yeah.”
And last, but not least, when I am asked where I would like to attend college, I simply state, “my safety’s Harvard”
Celebration! Absolutely. Nobody has any idea what I’m talking about either. And quite frankly, I might even be a little embarassed if they could pick up on my references.
Most certainly Beck. Pretty much all Michel Gondry’s music videos. The ones he did for the White Stripes are excellent too. I also like the Weezer videos Spike Jonze did. And as far as TV shows go, there are I tone I’d have to mention worthy of the criterion label, but most already come in decent packaging.
I agree. I am also a huge fan of Election. Not exactly all that controversial, but a fantastic dark comedy nontheless. And MAGNOLIA definetly, definitely, definitely. And I’m gonna throw in Toy Story 2. Just for kicks. And because it is the only one of all these wonderful films mentioned that 6-year-old me actually saw in the year 1999.
