Yeah, I found his stuff at the right time in my life ... and it really connected to me. I'm really glad I found him.
2 of my 4 favourite Japanese films in your 5 favourites! As you like not only Kurosawa and Ozu, but Kore-eda too, i'm confident you'll enjoy Mizoguchi films like Sansho the Bailiff and Ugetsu Monogatari. Maybe try Ornamental Hairpin by Shimizu too.
Ah, that's really cool. Did you get a chance to see "Aurora?" "The Death of Mr. Lazarescu" is one of my favourites. That's really cool. You guys are gonna be huge!* But, yeah, finding that answer... well, it's a search but probably shouldn't have a total answer. Not that any rambling pontification from me would help anyone find it.* Just keep making great art, my friend. :)* Thank you. That would be awesome. I mean, shipping will be outrageous but we can talk about reimbursement and such... Thanks.
Madadayo and Rhapsody in August are, by far, the best films Kurosawa made in the 80's or 90's. There is an incredible sense of hope in those films that aren't prevalent in nearly any of his other masterworks.* By the way, we should have an extended discussion of classic Japanese cinema.* P.S. - I already said this, but I'm an enormous admirer of the Black Country's work. Please let me know of anything you do because I put it next to the works of any documentary filmmaker working today. There are movements currently in China, currently in Austria and there are a few dedicated fellows in the Black Country; all of them are as important as the work of any filmmaker on earth.
