My suggestions for French New Wave related films would be “Masculin féminin” #308 (imo, it was OK), and “Elevator to the Gallows” #335 (which is very good, highly recommended).
Since you listed “I Vitteloni,” you may want to browse the catalog entry for “Il Posto” #194 as well, to see if it interests you. I own “Il Posto,” but haven’t watched it yet.
“Scrooge,” aka “A Christmas Carol” (1951), with Alastair Sim
“A Christmas Carol” (1999), TV movie with Patrick Stewart
“White Christmas” (I need to get the DVD, because they cut scenes out when they show it on TV)
“A Christmas Story” (big duh!!!)
It was either: “Ran” #316, or “Throne of Blood” #190, or “Late Spring” #331. I can’t remember which. The library of the college I graduated from has them. At the time, I was looking for “free” movies to watch, and I checked the aforementioned three out one day. In fact, my college’s library has a number of Criterion titles. That’s how I was introduced to Criterion. In fact, I later bought my own personal copies of some of the titles I checked out from the library. So…if anyone is interested in seeing for themselves the “Criterion treatment,” cruise over to your local library or college library. They may have a few titles you can check out.

I would like to see them include a “digital copy” of their titles, bundled with the purchase of the actual disc(s). That way one can obtain a version compatible with a portable video device, such as an iPod Touch or iPhone. However, Criterion may not want “to go there,” regarding such digital copies.
“For Your Eyes Only”: Ernst Blofeld, the James Bond villian, wheelchair and all, getting dropped down a factory smokestack by Bond in a helicopter. Too cool.
This is how I “introduced myself” to Criterion editions…my college alma mater library has a number of titles that I checked out. I would also recommend using the WorldCat website: http://www.worldcat.org/. You can search for any title, plus if you enter your zip code, the site automatically locates the library nearest you that has the title. It even has links to the libary’s own website for that item’s information, such as the call number. WorldCat is too cool. You can also create a free account and devise “favorite” libraries, book lists, DVD lists, etc.

Best known for his political thriller ‘Z’ about the assassination and cover-up of a Greek political dissident, released forty years ago, Gavras is credited with creating and mastering a new genre: the political thriller. With more than a dozen films to his name, Costa-Gavras’ latest is his most personal to date. ‘Eden is West’ tells the story of an immigrant in Europe, who heads for Paris to find a better life.”
