David Fincher’s defining Fight Club, Sam Mendes’ powerful American Beauty, Wong Kar-Wai’s In the mood for Love. Charlie Kaufman’s lynch inspired masterpieces, Eternal Sunshine, Adaptation. coming of age superhero movies SpiderMan, Dark Knight and a few more like shyamalan’s sixth sense, Lord of the Rings trilogy, lastly but not the least Matrix trilogy would be the prime movers and shakers of the decade.
A few films from India – Vishwanath’s Sagara sangamam; Balachander’s Rudraveena; Maniratnam’s Roja, Iruvar, Nayakan; RamGopal Varma’s Company, Satya; Satyajit Ray’s Aranyer Din Ratri;Aamir Khan’s Lagaan, Dil Chahtha Hai, Swades
of course Godfather 1&2 which did not come up in the search.
70’s classics French Connection, Apocalypse now, Kramer vs Kramer.
Spielberg’s Schindler’s List, Catch me if you can, Saving Private Ryan
More recently David Fincher’s Zodiac;Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige
Most of the Indian movies that are made even today are musicals with umpteen songs and dances merged into melodramatic sequences. But there is another side to the industry that makes about 700 movies per year.
Listed below are a few worthy entries into criterion.Ranging from Oscar Nominees to biopics, gangster epics to docu dramas, films with neo-realist flavor to true-blue bollywood song and dance fare.

Ray’s Charulata, Apu Trilogy( the third part “world of apu” is available on criterion), Aranyer Din Ratri should definitely be in criterion.
Mrinal Sen’s Kandahar, Akaler sandhane

Guru Datt’s Pyaasa, Kaagaz ke Phool, Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam

Exactly it has got its moments but like you said picnic scene has to be the best, and the game that they played is still on in some family parties I have been to. :-)
for Lillette & Vijay Raaz, for the very intelligent use of Hindi film music (a rarity), the wedding theme and the underlying little threads that culminate in the end.
added Monsoon Wedding to the list. Thanks for reminding George.
I have to watch Andrei Rublev, Rules of the game and may be Solaris without which my existence in this board is futile.
one advice for you folks who have not seen 8 1/2 – every movie you see more or less has an idea where it is heading to , but 81/2 turned an excellent movie despite not having a proper orientation, fellini had no idea what he was going to make – a masterpiece, go for it folks.
These are what I can remember as of now that blew me off track, I would love to update this post whenever I can,
Beginnings:
-81/2 – guido stuck in a dream (imagining reality)
-Sanjuro – first scene itself throws the conflict at you without even introducing the characters.
-American Beauty – i think it goes like this – "My name is lester Burnham, This is my street, this is my home, In a year I will be dead
-2001 A Space Odyssey – “Beginning of the Dawn”
anything else:
-Baptism scene at the end and Al Pacino and Diane Keaton conversation at the end from The Godfather
-Train sequence, missing chain found scene from Pather Panchali
- the final scenes when Malik is killed from Company
-final scene from “In the mood for love”
Any Wes Anderson movie is likeable in pieces, has its moments but on the whole it wont stand as a masterpiece.
Royal Tenenbaums would be his best movie followed by Life aquatic – Bill Murray if of course superb in all his movies.
Deathproof , if you choose to call horror genre, for me its more of a thriller though.
Blair Witch Project, Texas chainsaw massacre (1970’s version) and My bloody Valentine
Synecdoche N.Y was a confusing experience for me, but whatever i understood I loved it. Hoffmana and Samantha morton were outstanding, I will have to watch it again to catch the intricacies and symbolism.
By the way it was more like watching a lynch movie rather than a kaufman movie, maybe because of the sedate’ness in the pace.
I love the movie and particularly the expressionalism of godard through his characters. I love it when Marianne sings and the party scene and this line.
Ferdinand: what is cinema?
Sam Fuller : A film is like a battleground. There’s love, hate, action, violence and death. In one word, emotions.
I have had this Blockbuster movie pass for 5 years now, and at my peak i did watch like 300 in a year maybe.
but now for this year i should be close to 100 or less than that.
