Truly brilliant film. Directing, acting and writing are all top draw. The acting by Firth especially is frighteningly good.
Being a fan of Lost In Translation I wanted Somewhere to be great. The odds were against it from the get go, Stephen Dorff is no Bill Murray and L.A isn't as visually striking as Tokyo, well not in this film. However I really enjoyed Somewhere, a beautiful looking film and Dorff's performance feels so real. You were meant to feel empathy for a rich good-looking actor and I did. Shows the strength of the writing.
A small film about censorship and ultimately a man who just wanted to be loved. Franco is solid in this contained performance, I just wish he was given more. It's beautifully shot but is interrupted by animated sequences that for me didn't work. At 85 minutes it shouldn't drag and it did a little. I enjoyed the film, the trial and interview scenes stand out but this film could have been so much more.
