it’s hard to say all-time favorites, but these immediately come to mind
fight scene in Barry Lyndon- amazing camera work and interrupts “flow” of movie in best possible way
the end of Paris, Texas- the shot of travis in the parking lot is a favorite
riverboat sequence from Night of the Hunter-speaks for itself
this quote of his is a pretty good explanation of his opinions and ratings
“When you ask a friend if Hellboy is any good, you’re not asking if it’s any good compared to Mystic River, you’re asking if it’s any good compared to The Punisher. And my answer would be, on a scale of one to four, if Superman is four, then Hellboy is three and The Punisher is two. In the same way, if American Beauty gets four stars, then (The United States of) Leland clocks in at about two.”
Ignoring his ridiculous talent, he had major studio funding for films of which he had final cut. He could shoot for as long as he wished and never had to go back to Hollywood after Lolita, working just minutes from his home. That alone makes him the man.
After watching Mr. Hulot’s Holiday and Playtime (in 70mm no less) i too was disappointed in Mon Oncle. It’s definately the least compelling and pleasurable of the three I’ve seen. I get the impression people expect to bust a gut when they watch a Tati film for the first time. For me, at least, his movies are not front to back laugh-out-loud funny, but some of the most unique, subtle, smirk-inducing comedies I’ve seen. You just can’t beat the vibe of the seaside resort and the playful, lilting french muzak in Hulot’s Holiday.
Even if the dvd release isnt that good, can anyone attest as to the image quality on the latest release of this movie? Is it acceptable for this ridiculously beautiful movie, or is that another reason this needs to be on Blu-Ray?
The only foreign tv series I’ve seen have been british. The Prisoner is an amazing show, one of my all time favorites. The miniseriese The Singing Detective and State of Play are also both really excellent. Comedy-wise, The Mighty Boosh can be really funny and I’ve been hearing great things about Peep Show, which I may have to watch. Edge of Darkness was quite good too, but took a while to get going. It was cool not to really know what was going on 3 episodes in, but still be hooked. I’m psyched for the remake, even if it is starring Mel Gibson.
What I don’t understand is why there has to be 5 or 10. Why not 8? Why not 13? Why not 3? There shouldn’t be any set number, just the number of worthy nominees for the best movie made in a year. Of course, this is the oscars we’re talking about, who thought Slumdog was the best film last year. But if this allows more foreign films, documentaries, animation and comedies to get nominated and get wider exposure, why not? I can’t really think of any comedies or animation films worthy of a best picture though, even Wall-E was way overrated.
The King of Comedy and After Hours deserved to be mentioned alongside Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull and Mean Streets. They’re actually my favorite Scorsese movies
I was actually disappointed by this movie. I’d seen and loved Le Samourai, Le Cercle Rouge, Bob Le Flambeur, and Second Breath. I saw it a while ago, so I can’t say for sure why I was underwhelmed. Maybe it was just overhyped when it was re-released a few years ago. One thing I remember was when they had to run from the firing squad and the main character got away. It felt random and lacked suspense, but maybe that was the point. I think the next scene was them in the car turning past soldiers with the epilogue following, showing the futility of the escape I suppose.
Can anyone tell me if Melville’s Le Doulos is any good. How does it hold up to his other crime movies?
I haven’t seen too many movies released this year, but In the Loop will definately have a place in my list.
And, Dimitris, while you may be right about official release dates, these are personal best of lists, not records of facts. If someone sees a movie that wasn’t released to their local theatres until 2009 despite being released earlier, I doubt they care when it was officially released. The time period of the writing and production of a movie is more relevant and interesting anyway.
I guess this is pretty cool. It’s hard to get psyched for another Holocaust movie, hopefully this will be the last of them. Who do you think would be a good director? Someone new, like Paul Thomas Anderson? Maybe Scorsese? Todd Field?
i’ve only seen play time in 70mm (once) and i’m wondering how bad the quality of the criterion dvd is compared to the 70mm print. just thinking about the scene shot from outside the apartments gives me the chills, I’d hate to lose that experience.
In the Loop, vicious and vulgar political satire from 2009, funnier than most movies I’ve seen in the past couple of years. Not surprisingly, it originated from television
“Veronica Mars” is an amazing show actually, mostly just the first season though. It’s really noirish and dark and mature for a show about teenagers. IMO, it’s up there with “Twin Peaks” in mystery tv, it’s a lot of fun to watch.
Also, it may not really count, but “Strangers with Candy” is pretty great too if you are looking for a comedy. It’s a twisted take on the after school special where the characters learn all the wrong lessons. Though all the main characters are adults, they’re more immature than all the actual teenagers in the show.
I saw this in theaters when i was 9 or 10, so yeah, this would probably be one of my favorite movies of all time. it really makes me wish The Simpsons made a movie in the mid 90s.
I second the recommendations of The Singing Detective, House of Cards, and the Prisoner, some of the best television ever. I would also throw in State of Play if you’re into political/journalist stuff.
Comedy wise-Brass Eye, Peep Show, The Thick of It, 15 Storeys High are all brilliant and unique shows that any fan of TV should see.
Ha! Searching this board for a topic on Local Hero to see a Forsyth thread bumped today. What a strange little world. Local Hero may just be the best feel-good movie ever. Absolutely pitch perfect. Zulawski’s Possession is a truly weird, fucked up movie that might not be classically horror, but illicts terror in me for sure.

Apparently, Kubrick’s brother-in-law wants to get things going on an Aryan Papers movie. He wants Ang Lee to direct.
