YURI NORSTEIN - MASTER IN ANIMATION over 3 years ago

Is any one familiar with his work? His film “Tale of Tales” has been heralded as the best animated film of all time. It won various awards worldwide and Hayao Miyazaki has stated Norstein as one of his favorites. he has been working on “The Overcoat” for 25 years and is still not done. I hope The Criterion Collection releases his complete works along with his “Russian Sugar” ad and Winter Days segment.

Funny that you mention Aleksandr Petrov. Just this week I had the pleasure to watch The Cow, which impressed me very much, Rusalka, and Dreams of a Simple Man (the “Simple” part is mistranslated as “Ridiculous”). I ordered My Love, which is part of a compiltation of shorts, but given Petrov’s talents and acclaim (an Academy Award nod for all his work except Dreams) he deserves his own release, something that unfortunately has not come (except Old Man and the Sea). What do you say about petitioning for Norstein and Petrov for their individual Criterion releases?

YURI NORSTEIN - MASTER IN ANIMATION over 3 years ago

Another criminally underrated animator that I hope gets The Criterion treatment is Lotte Reiniger. She is a pioneer in animation and one of the first to release a feature. Reiniger has so many films (mostly shorts) for them to choose from.

A pioneer I hope also gets released sooner or later by Criterion (in stop motion animation), is Aleksandr Ptushko. Image Entertainment used to have his works, now they are out of print. Criterion could get them easier since they are in good terms with Image. Karel Zeman is another one similar to him that is peaking my interest and barely available on dvd.

That being said I hope that Yuri Norstein is the first animator who gets a full Criterion release (not Eclipse!), along with his commissioned side works, as I mentioned above (ads, etc.).

Criterion has released Le Jetee, Stan Brakhage’s films, Patriotism, Night and Fog, White Mane, The Red Balloon. The latter is to be released officially by Criterion, since White Mane and Balloon were released through Janus Films. Those are examples that they take interest in short films, since half of them were individual releases. You have a valid point about Films By Jove, but then again they could (as they always do) licence the rights from Jove. My only worry would be if Criterion wouldn’t be allowed to use the original Russian credits. Other than that there’s no worry or doubts for me.
There has been some debating about which is the first animated film, but Reiniger’s Achmed is the only surviving one.

Films By Jove doesn’t have an official website, but they were credited by Criterion in the Ivan’s Childhood release (probably the production stills) -posible collaboration? In spite of this trouble there is an answer as to who owns the American rights. Negotiations could be reached and resolved to all parties on the issue. Since the Masters of Russian Animation dvd (where Norstein’s work was officially available in the US) is out of print and Soyusmultfilm doesn’t have any catalogue in the US, it would only benefit both companies if they come to a sort of terms through Criterion. They would be fools to not let Criterion release the film. It’s a win/lose situation, and both rights holding companies are almost defunct and inactive in putting their films in the market and elsewhere. It would be a sad conclusion that their most renowned works are introduced to many through YouTube (ie bad quality).

Worst Criterion DVDs over 3 years ago

Worst of all is Monsters and Madmen, I would prefer if they had released Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outerspace. It at least has some historical value in cinema.

Magica Russica features Norstein, and I’m glad you mentioned it. It would be a great feature for a Norstein dvd extra, if the Collection puts it.

Most violent films you've seen over 3 years ago

If you think Salo is not violent you know you have seen the likes of Gaspar Noe films/Saw/Hostel/torture porn/Takeshi Miike/Cannibal Holocaust/Faces of Death/Michael Haneke/Zombie/Natural Born Killers enough to numb you from it. I’m not saying you saw them all or are a sick individual, but you get my point.

WHICH MOVIES...PUT OUT IN LAST 5 YEARS...DO YOU THINK WILL ONE DAY JOIN THE CRITERION COLLECTION? over 3 years ago

Nothing anyone has mentioned, anyways it’s too early too say. There’s dozens of little known films from around the world dating back to the 70’s and 60’s and even from cinema giants Bergman, Kurosawa, Tarkovsky, Reisnass, and Bunuel, that they have yet to release. A lot of people are naive in mentioning big studio titles, those they won’t come by and already have nice editions anyhow.

Criterion covers you don't like over 3 years ago

Let’s face it we judge things by the cover, and if it doesn’t impress us we don’t follow it. Here are my complaints:

Danton
Simon of the Desert
Empire of Passion

others I didn’t care for:

White Dog
Europa (altered)

US Title – Real Title

Winter Light – The Comminucants
High and Low – Heaven and Hell
Band of Outsiders – Band Apart
Run Lola Run – Lola Runs
Show Me Love – Fucking Amal

any others that were not intended by the filmmakers to be translated different from their original into English?

Mistransalted titles over 3 years ago

wonder6789, I was refering to Band of Outsiders’ literal English title, I find it ridiculous when generally French film titles are refered to in English in their French form, and the opposite with Russian, Swedish, Danish films, etc. An example of this is Jacques Becker’s Touchez pas au grisbi and Piliat’s À nos amours.

And Croonie, I don’t have time to look at all the thousandths of topics in this site, unlike a twit like yourself. The only thing that is comical is you putting Alexandre Aja, Neil Marshall, and Guy Ritchie in your auteurs list.

Criterion covers you don't like over 3 years ago

Kazu Watanabe, I understand that the new cover for White Dog might be more in context with the film, but since I was already exposed to the first cover, I was all of a sudden taken back and the impression was diminished. I also think the cover fo Ikiru was very good, the Red Beard one the same, but it might have been better without the characters for the latter. The Army of Shadows one seemed too similar to other covers of the film, but I have no major complaints.

Mistransalted titles over 3 years ago

Wonder6789, that doesn’t say anything about the “American levels of education and cultural autism”. If that remark was intended for an offense, it was a cheap shot.

It’s a question of how you want to refer the film’s title as, for example À bout de souffle or Breathless, but I’m talking about the literal translations. À nos amours and Touchez pas au grisbi are perfect examples of films whose titles are ridicilous to leave in their original form without a translation, I might say the same about the American films you mentioned in France.

Bande À Part in English will be Band Apart or A Band Apart (for the declarative), that was my point.

I will ask you this, how do you refer to Tolstoy’s War & Peace, in it’s French translation or as Voyna i Mir?

Mistransalted titles over 3 years ago

You changed the subject completely., which was literal translations, not how we should refer to foreign language films. The most important thing is to understand what the title means. À Nos Amours might be easy for a French speaking audiences or to those cultures whose native tongue is a romance language or heavily influenced by Latin. For your War & Peace argument, the film i just mentioned and Touchez pas au grisbi are easily translated in English, the former is even more universally simpler to translate.

Good point on Bergman’s A Passion (The Passion of Anna in the US).

Expanding the Criterion Collection over 3 years ago

To the original poster, The Double Life of Veronique is not a “capricious choice”, it’s one of his best films and it could be argued that it’s better than the films in his Colors trilogy. The Double Life of Veronique is also one of the best films ever made, therefore it’s a great representation of Kieslowski in the Criterion Collection.

'The Last House on the Left' inspired by Bergman's 'Virgin Spring' about 3 years ago

Last House on The Left is a remake of The Virgin Spring. Nothing more, nothing less. Bergman’s film however is much better, but that’s a no brainer.

Curious Case of Benjamin Button on Criterion? about 3 years ago

I don’t know if this has been already written about and cleared/verified, but is there any truth to the widespread internet rumor that Paramount officially announced that Benjamin Button will be released on May 5 by Criterion in a 2 disc special edition?

I find that very strange and hard to believe since Criterion just announced their May and June released. Curious Case is not listed.
