I go to a certain theater almost every week. A lot of the films on this site were introduced to me at that theater. Everybody who goes there appreciates film, so out of the 50+ times I’ve gone there, I’ve never once had to deal with some obnoxious people talking through the movie or whatever. I think it’s a really great experience seeing a film with a bunch of other people that also love it.
Besides, epic movies like 2001 or the good, the bad, and the ugly are just so much better on the big screen.
The first time I saw it I really liked it. After 4 or 5 viewings, though, I’ve noticed that I’m basically waiting for Ledger’s scenes. I feel like he’s the only part of the movie that really holds up after repeated viewings.
Série Noire – 8.5
Hadn’t heard of Patrick Dewaere until I had seen this, but his performance is amazing.
Watchmen – 7
Definitely not perfect. Had some pretty crappy scenes (hallelujah), but some pretty brilliant moments as well… (Opening credits, Rorschach, Manhattan on mars…)
Any wes anderson scenes, particularly the end credits in life aquatic. Or the dinner scene in rushmore… haha.
On a more epic scale i’d say the end scene of 2001 or the opening scene of once upon a time in the west.
If I had to pick a favorite it’d be the last scene in either 8 1/2 or la dolce vita. I love them both!
Easy Rider
Phantom of the Paradise
Now, Voyager
The Passionate Friends
Secret Beyond the Door
All Sean Connery 007’s
Night of the Iguana
Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte
Phantom Lady
Porco Rosso
Ruthless
Just got back from a double feature of Fistful of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More. What always strikes me about Sergio Leone’s films is how each main character always has their own distinct sound/instrument.
Clint Eastwood has whistling.
Charles Bronson has a harmonica
Lee Van Cleef has what i believe to be a mouth harp.
I know there are others sounds used (Eli Wallach, Jason Robards) but I can’t think of them.
Anyway, it’s interesting how this gives each character an added dimension. Each sound has it’s own personality, and we’ll automatically associate that sound with the certain character.
Any other thoughts on this? I’m sure Leone wasn’t the only one to use sound to such an extent, can anyone think of any directors who did something similar?
The greatest TV show ever!
I wouldn’t consider the middle episodes to be filler, with the exception of the 3 or so that don’t even take place in the Village.
Anyway, really amazing stuff. I’ve been obsessed with it since I was 8 or so and my parents rented them on VHS.
Empire all the way! I like Nausicaa a lot, but come on, Empire is one of the greatest sci-fi films ever.
Even if the two are “fantasy/adventure/sci-fi pictures with strong mythological underpinnings”, I don’t think they have enough in common to really compare them seriously.
Some of my favorite Bowie songs are the instrumentals on Low. Warszawa and Art Decade are amazing.
My top five with Bowie actually singing:
Heroes
Space Odyssey
Ashes to Ashes
Sound & Vision
Oh! You Pretty Things
I honestly find their styles to be too different for me to favor one. I love them both equally!
Truffaut’s films feel much like poems, whereas I think of Godard more as an essayist/novelist.

Why aren’t any of Aldrich’s films on this site?
Kiss me deadly would have to be my favorite. Hush, hush sweet charlotte is also pretty good, it’s the one he did right after baby jane.
I’m not sure if it’s in print but if you can find it check out The Last Sunset, I saw it in a theater, pretty interesting.
Some others:
Attack!
Vera Cruz
Apache
I have yet to see Dirty Dozen
