Hollywood is making a sequel to a mediocre yet commercially successful film? Unbelievable!
Beautiful wide B&W frames courtesy of cinematographer Masao Tamai.
Incredibly beautiful film but hampered by it's own ambition. (The dinosaur scene is a perfect example, I feel as though Malick added it "just because he could".) I've heard people comparing it to 2001 which is understandable. The problem is, 2001 is about all of humanity, and as much as Tree of Life tries to encapsulate those themes, it's still basically just about Sean Penn. Still an incredible experience. 4.5/5
So beautiful and so depressing.
How can such a horrible movie have such a great cast?
It was all downhill after the ewoks...
The height of the 70's conspiracy film!
Forgettable 50's b-movie. Nothing really to talk about here.
Woo!!!
A brilliant final 15 minutes can't make up for the rest of the film, which is ridiculously dull.
Are they seriously going to try and make seven of these?
At other times, it's so brilliant it's incredible.
What a masterpiece! Full Metal Jacket pales in comparison.
Patrick McGoohan! Sean Connery! Jill Ireland! This movie has it all and more!
Could be thought of as the poor man's Citizen Kane, but still a well-made film with striking camera work.
*Spoilers*: Probably the greatest death scene of all time. Kevin Costner bungee jumps out of a hot air balloon using a normal piece of rope, grabs a little girl being chased by jet skis, and bounces back up to the hot-air balloon. Then Dennis Hopper and the two other jet skiers have a three-way head on collision and blow up. Seriously, though, how did they actually spend $200 million on this crap?
I'll be BAAAACHH.
Indeed it is!
Seriously Troper, I was thinking the same thing!
It's an average film with a few moments of greatness. The scene with the two burnt trees, the scene with the twisted playground wreakage, both are pretty wonderful. However, I think Kurosawa made a couple weird aesthetic decisions that hurt the film. The music in the final sequence, for example, ruined what is otherwise a beautiful finale.
I'm still trying to figure out why someone thought a movie about facebook is a cool idea. Also, that Jesse Eisenberg kid annoys the crap out of me.
I was able to see a beautiful 35mm print of this and it was an incredible experience! This is a remarkable achievement, even when compared to the rest of Kurosawa's oeuvre. I'm glad he stepped up his game with the cinematography as well, I thought Kagemusha was a little bland visually, but Ran is absolutely gorgeous.
My inner nerd (the reason I think Star Trek and Zelda are really cool) thought this movie was kind of incredible.
Bwahaha, it was ridiculous how unintentionally funny this was. If you want an entertaining read, I recommend videogum's synopsis: http://videogum.com/77772/the_hunt_for_the_worst_movie_o_63/franchises/the-hunt-for-the-worst-movie-of-all-time/
I don't really mind him, I thought he was a good Legolas...
Greatest actor of all time.
Yeah!!
It's also scary how much the world changed in 100 years. Haha, Knut, what are you talking about?
Agreed, his score for Lost is brilliant.
This was quite incredible. Shepitko seems to be a major talent and I'm so happy her films have made it into the eclipse series, although this is definitely deserving of it's own criterion release. Looking forward to watching The Ascent!
