Thanks for the follow; i played for Verdun v Strasbourg at rugby in my youth, big plate of Choucroute after the match.
This is nice but after almost twenty years spend in Strasbourg, I still do not feel Alsacian !
Thanks, LFDMM, for fanning Louise. It still needs some work. I'll get to it when I finish Borzage. Bob
Ah Borzage ! Do not forget "The ay I met Caruso". I know, this is a TV film and not a feature film. But it was a TV masterpiece. I had pleasure to show it to my students. they were amazed.
Working chronologically, I'm only up to 1937 now, but I do intend to track down the tv films which at this time are easier to get in France than the US. I wish I had a nickel for every American film I had to order from Europe! What age are your students and what subject are you teaching?
I was teaching "History of television" at the University of Brussels. It was some kind of hobby. "The day I met Caruso" was broadcast years ago on France 3, Sunday midnight. I was lucky to record it. Would be impossible to find now on DVD. A Borzage coffret was released some months ago in France, but not as rich and nice as the US one.
On Borzage, there is a definitive book in French by Hervé Dumont. I think he is also at the origin of the DVD released by Carlotta.
Dumont's excellent book is my bible, even though the translation has a few problems and, I understand it is not as well illustrated as the original edition. The Carlotta Borzage DVDs each has one of the tv films among its extras. Caruso is on the disc with Lucky Star and The River. Whatever the price, it is a bargain. Have you seen those last four silent masterpieces?
Yes, I have seen them. "The River" on France 3 and "Lucky Star" in the NFT in London, years ago. An epiphany !
Thanks for the follow, and don't miss Seventh Heaven and Street Angel. My favorite of those four gems is whichever one I have just seen. So, it changes often. They are all great!
