About Me

Cinema. Music. Literature.

In 1973 in the parish of W, 37 people were killed as a result of falling out of windows. Of the 37 people who fell, 7 were children under 11, 11 were adolescents under 18 and the remaining adults were all under 71 save for a man believed by some to be 103.

Five of the 7 children fell from bedroom windows as did 4 of the 11 adolescents and 3 of the 19 adults. Of the 7 children who fell all cases were of misadventure save for one of infanticide.

Of the 11 adolescents, 3 committed suicide for reasons of the heart, 2 fell through misadventure, 2 were drunk, one was pushed, one was accredited insane, one jumped for a bet and one was experimenting with a parachute.

Of the 12 men, 2 jumped deliberately, 4 were pushed, 5 were cases of misadventure and one, under the influence of an unknown drug, thought he could fly.

Of the 11 adolescents who fell, 2 were clerks, 2 were unemployed, 1 was married, 1 was a window cleaner and 5 were students of aeronautics, one of whom played the harpsichord.

Among the 19 adults who fell were an air-stewardess, 2 politicians, an ornithologist, a glazier and a seamstress.

Of the 37 people, 19 fell in summer before midday, 8 fell on summer afternoons and 3 fell into snow. The ornithologist, the adolescent experimenting with the parachute and the man who thought he could fly, all fell or were pushed on spring evenings. At sunset on the 14th of April 1973, the seamstress and the student of aeronautics who played the harpsichord, jumped into a plum tree from a window in this house.

A painter of space engaged on a quest for time.

The Steel Trap

A fun, taut little noir thriller. Perhaps there isn't quite enough meat on its bones, but it maintains a decent amount of ticking bomb style suspense.

Which ones and what were your thoughts? For such a prolific filmmaker, I find the better part of his filmography well worth checking out; it truly feels like a 'body' of work - one big shifting tapestry.

Yea I agree.RWF had three phrases each one he was getting better with his craft. My first film was Ali:eats the soul, Whity, BRD trilogy, Berlin Alexanderplatz. Fox and his friends. I can go on and on but those are my tops. And what are your favs?

A truly difficult question, but these have really stuck with me: Veronika Voss, Berlin Alexanderplatz, In a Year with 13 Moons, Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, The Merchant of Four Seasons, The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, Fox and His Friends, The Marriage of Maria Braun & Love Is Colder Than Death

Your picks are exceptional. Bitter tears also got me You probably know this Bitter was his autobio of his relationships. I like how RWF uses music to convey particular mood whether to reveal something of the character( like bitter when great pretender was playing in the last scene) or purely provoking or poking fun at their situation. Yesterday I finally finished Berlin;epilogue. I was blown away of the images but the music seemed liked another character. What are your thoughts of RWF use of music?

That is a potent example, and you bring up a great point that I perhaps haven't given enough thought to! You're pushing me towards another Fassbinder binge (it's been several years since I inhaled his filmography). I remember there being some interesting use of music (and sound) in Veronika Voss to signal different states of mind. I'd be curious to know more about his working relationship with Peer Raben..

Dear Mr. King: I'm glad to connect with you here. I hope you are well in your creating and living. You're about me caught my eye first, then later took hold of my heart second and finally my soul. I will not ask you silly questions regarding the "realness" of it. The emotions it brings up in me are indescribable as I am currently going through a personal measure of loss. I hope to learn more of you and from you in the future. yours, JP
