I am fascinated by the full spectrum the cinema has to offer, ranging from grindhouse to arthouse. Special interests are – in no particular order – horror cinema, character-driven films, surrealism and avant-garde filmmaking.

Hey there. I just noticed you created a topic on Free Will versus Irreversible, and I was curious to know if you've seen any other films like Free Will? It is one of the few films I've seen and it felt more of a journey and experience, than merely a film. Even though I adore 90% of the Berliner Schule films, this is still my favourite German film. I would be curious to know if you've ever saw anything similar. Thanks
First you might want to have a look at some of Glasner's other films. THIS IS LOVE: story too convoluted, but good acting. MERCY: might be similar, I'm keen to see it myself. It's not easy to name a similar film. Content-wise it reminded me a bit of HOMO FABER of which I only know the novel (determinism, fatalism). Marc Didden's BRUSSELS BY NIGHT has equally dark realism, but is not as convincing. The Korean ONE FINE SPRING DAY is a subtle exploration of how its protagonists find each other, then slowly withdraw from each other. But it is in no way as bleak as FREE WILL. SOMEWHERE is slow, lingers on moments, scenes & characters, but is again not as bleak. THE WHITE RIBBON is similar in pace and seriousness, but with Haneke's style it's quite a different experience.
Thanks. I've not heard of most of those so thank you, I look forward to watching them!! I still have yet to try his earlier work, as I had heard it wasn't up to the level of his earlier films.
Hey, great review of "The Turin Horse". I saw it earlier today and I completely agree with what you said. It's a really difficult and slow-paced film, full of philosophy and poetry. I myself found it hard to enjoy. But Tarr is so well-respected on this site and his works are deemed as masterpieces here. So it's great to see someone share a similar opinion with me! (:
It's definitely a film that is extremely difficult to watch. At least I haven't seen anything like it before. I think it is a very peculiar film and enjoyment is just not one of its goals. I wouldn't call it a failure however. The apocalyptic power with which it portrays its global theme is very successful and the film stays with you for days.
I saw this film a couple of days ago at the Berlinale and this was my first experience of a Béla Tarr film. It presents the meager life of a carter, his daughter and their horse in the closing years… read review
