This forum is pretty dumb! If you think Forest Gump and Up In The Air were the worst film of all time then clearly you haven’t seen a lot of movies. How are Forest Gump and Up In The Air possibly worse than films like I Spit on Your Grave, Caligula, Battlefield Earth, North, or The Horrors of Spider Island? The answer is pretty obvious to me.
I Spit on Your Grave isn’t a feminist classic! It’s completely degrading to women! It does nothing but show a beautiful innocent women be raped and beaten multiple times! Then all of the following scenes shows her in the worst possible light! All she does for the rest of the movie is violently kill all of her rapists. That doesn’t show a strong woman overcoming the power of man, that shows a mentally disturbed women who is so shaken from her experience that sue can’t think of a better punishment. There’s no redeeming quality for the main woman in that film and if she’s supposed to represent all women then that means the film calls women dumb murderers who hate men. There are no enjoyable scenes in that film! And I’m not saying that every film needs to be a happy film, but those “hard to watch” scenes need to inspire thought, or move you emotionally. But they don’t, they just make you cringe. I Spit on Your Grave is hands down one the worst movies I’ve ever wasted my time with!
One thing I noticed was that the highest rated movies are the most depressing and long movies. It’s almost like when anybody on here watches a movie, they only rate it high it the movie is long and they didn’t enjoy watching it. You’d think that if you don’t enjoy a movie you would give it a low rating. I guess common sense is a learned trait.
I agree with Tyler! Long and boring doesn’t mean good.
@Sanjuro:
Pretentious means done for show. People are only rating bad movies 5 stars because they feel like they have to. They want to “show” people that they are consistent with everyone else. So I think Tyler knows exactly what he mean when he says pretentious.
Fight Club and I Spit on Your Grave are bad but they have high ratings. And all of the John Waters films are horrible and they have really surprisingly high ratings on here.
I think he’s a great a director who has made a lot of great movies: Minority Report, Minich, Raider of the Lost Ark, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Close Encounters is the Third Kind, Jaws, The Color Purple, Schindler’s List, and Saving Private Ryan. I think you have to be pretty dumb not to realize howuch of an influence Spielberg has had on the film industry. I mean think about how important Jaws is. It completely changed the Hollywood film industry.
Tyler, you bring up a good point. Ther can’t be a definitive list but there are great directors. And Peter Jackson is talented about half of the time. And I feel that Ron Howard is barely under the great mark. He is a phenomenal film maker!
Malick is a master of visuals and The Assassination on Jesse James: By The Coward Robert Ford is a visually marvel. As you know Tyler I agree with you. I think that “Jesse James” is a truly great film and is one of the best of the past decade. Dominick is a visionary, maybe in the same extreme as Kubrick, but in a more Terrence Malick way.
At this point, Kubrick is greater. But Dominick still has decades more to prove himself. I’m really excited to see what he has to offer in the future!
I had an interesting conversation with my brother Tyler and he asked an interesting question: What is thee film of the color era? If Birth of a Nation is thee film of the silent era and Citizen Kane is thee film of the sound era, then what is thee film of the color era. After about hour of discussing it, we concluded Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas because it basically puts every technique in one film. It kind of summarizes everything known about up to it’s point, like Birth of a Nation did when it come out. What are your thoughts and opinions about thee film of the color era?
I considered 2001: A Space Odyssey because I feel that as a film it is greater, but more techniques are employed in Goodfellas. Also the characters are examined much more closely and develop a lot more in Goodfellas.
There are some people in this forum that are saying it’s not a masterpiece. I do say it’s a masterpiece and I can back that up. It’s hard to do it in a forum though. It’s much better in person.
This forum turned into something I really didn’t want it to, something stupid. I knew people would disagree but I didn’t want it to turn into a giant argument back and forth between two guys. If any key has anything productive to contribute, please do.
I wanted to seewhat film people thought, whether it be Goodfellas or not, and why. Not people talking about how this whole idea stupid or two people arguing back and forth.
Martin Scorsese’s Bringing Out the Dead has had a lot of mixed reviews. Most people that I’ve come across say that it’s one of his weakest movies. While in my opinion, and the opinion of few others, it’s in a list of his top three absolute best. What are people’s thoughts and opinions on this? Is the film weak or strong?
I’ve never heard of a Director’s Cup Match before. Well I guess if I knew there was such a thing, I wouldn’t have bothered haha. Well now that this forum is up anyway, does anybody want to contribute?
@ Matt Parks:
I see what you’re saying. I think the long takes make a big impact! It gives you time to admire the way the film looks, the great performances, and the emotions of every character. And the longer takes really effect the pacing of the film. It stands out to me too.
The thing that I love so mug about it is how passionately it was made. And Scorsese puts you so far into Nicholas Cage’s head that you feel his desperation as well. I know that not everyone will connect with him like it did but that’s why I love it so much.
@ David Ehrenstein
Do you really think The King of Comedy is Scorsese’s best? I felt it was one of his weakest. I’m not saying you’re wrong or anything but why do you feel it’s his best?
Whenever I watch The King of Comedy I can see a great movie somewhere in there. I see all of the themes and the fine performances but there’s jut something about. It’s hard for me to explain. The King of Comedy just doesn’t have any hair on it, you know what I mean? It certianly isn’t a bad film, I just feel it’s weak. I think Scorsese’s weakest is The Color of Money.
