I was horrified when I watched Georges Franju’s documentary Blood of the Beasts, but since it’s simply documenting the everyday procedures in a slaughterhouse it really didn’t bother me on an ethical level. I am nevertheless a vegetarian.
Do you think Gelsomina and Zampano had a sexual relationship? I say this because towards the beginning of the movie they sleep together inside the wagon for the first time and Zampano gets very close to Gelsomina and then the scene fades to black, somehow indicating that they got intimate. What do you guys think?
i personally love the subtlety of the movie and thought the protagonists delivered beautiful performances. Tokyo looks positively magical and i connected on some level with the characters. We’ve all had similar experiences of alienation and finding comfort in that one special person.True its a little slow but nevertheless a little gem.
When the bum appears from behind the wall in Mulholland Drive (scared the fuck out of me)
Betty’s audition (phenomenal performance by N. Watts)
The “this is the girl” moment while the girl is singing that catchy 60’s pop tune
A random moment when Betty and Rita go club Silencio and the camera sort of stumbles and then rushes towards the door (it just seems so foreboding)
The scene in Inland Empire when Nicki rehearses the script and cries
The scene when Nicki comes back in on herself while rehearsing the scene
When Nicki is crying while all the whores look at her after her mind snapped and that creepy Ghosts of Love song is playing
i watched this movie a long time ago and i thought it was a run-of-the-mill thriller. Nothing stood out to me except the sequence where Ryan Gosling runs around to the sound of Massive Attack’s “Angel” which i thought the most predictable and cliched use of the song.
three scenes from Vertigo
- When Kim Novak stands by the Golden Gate and then throws herself into S.F bay
- When Kim and Jimmy Stewart kiss as the waves crash behind them
- When Kim and Jimmy embrace as the camera does a 360 turn in Kim’s hotel room revealing the convent
Also most scenes from Kubrick’s 2001 Space Odyssey and Dr. Strangelove
A couple of establishing shots of the space ship from Ridley Scott’s Alien
The shot of Natalie Portman’s face in the pink wig at the strip club from Closer
The nighttime shots of Tokyo from Lost in Translation
The askew angles in the Third Man
The shots of the misty hills in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Plus:
The shot of Greta Garbo in Queen Christina when she’s remembering the room

The first film that changed my view of cinema was Spike Jonze’s “Adaptation”. Maybe it was because i was finally old enough to choose my own movies and i came of age, so to speak. Then i fell in love with Sofia Coppola’s “Lost in Translation” and Michel Gondry’s “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” After that i discovered indie movies, David Lynch, Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, Bergman, Fellini, etc… I’ve never looked back since.
Anyone find a similarity between Persona and David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive? There are two women at the heart of both films (one of them is an actress) who seem to fall in love with each other and somehow merge their identities (note the scene from Mulholland Drive when Betty and Rita are in the club Silencio and they are both wearing blond wigs). Both movies also break off on a totally different direction towards the middle and have no easy answers. Do you think Lynch was somehow influenced by Bergman’s Persona? Or was he deliberately trying to duplicate the film? What other similarities between the films do you find?
I’m surprised there are hardly any mentions for Ridley Scott’s masterful ALIEN (1979)
