Scorsese fans out there, it's time to unite! over 4 years ago

He’s my all time favorite as well. I love his films, his love of films, I love listening to him talk about film. I wish he were my uncle.

And I would LOVE to see Criterion release Kundun on blu-ray!

Waking Life (Film or Meditation) over 4 years ago

A lot of people have remarked how pretentious they think this film is. This annoys me because it’s as if anytime someone deals with phiosophy they’re going to be labeled as pretentious. I think it’s unfair to slap this film with the dreaded “pretentious” label. This film merely explores(beautifully, in my opinion) a myriad of ideas and musings about the nature of reality, life, etc. It does not offer definitive answers. I does not tell the viewer what to think. It’s a bit saddening and upsetting to think of people being discouraged form intellectual or philosophical pursuits for fear of being labeled pretentious(God forbid!)

Top Ten Films of 2008 over 4 years ago

1) WALL E – yeah, #1 is easy. This was far and away the best movie I saw last year and one of the best things I’ve ever seen. It’s a true masterpiece of pure cinema and the absolute height of what popular movies can achieve.
the rest of the list I’m not so definitive with the order but here goes:
Chop Shop
In Bruges
Synecdoche, New York
Milk
The Wrestler
Revolutionary Road
Slumdog Millionaire
The Dark Knight
Son Of Rambow
Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona

I try not to watch bad movies but I really hated Cloverfield. I thought it was a reprehensible film.

Your favorite title sequence over 2 years ago

I love a lot of the elaborate credit sequences, but something about well done simplicity gets me. I don’t think it can rightly be called a “credit sequence”, but I love the title card and how and when it appears onscreen in “Children Of Men”. I also love the titles in “Leaving Las Vegas” for similar reasons. And I think “Boyz N The Hood” was the first time I was struck by such a thing.

THE UNOFFICIAL MOVIE RECOMMENDATION THREAD over 2 years ago

Symi: as far as a recommendation for films similar to “Three Times” – you’ve probably seen “In The Mood For Love” already ?
Have you seen Aronofsky’s “The Fountain” ? It’s not really the same style but it does have the ‘love across several time periods’ element.

are there any HD/BD detractors on this site over 2 years ago

I would like to echo the comment of Matt L and also add the the settings in the TV and the type of TV can make a big difference as well. I have a Panasonic BD player and a Panasonic Viera Plasma with all of my settings optimized for the viewing of movies and I absolutely love how movies look.
Recently I watched my blu-ray of Moon(which looks amazing on my tv) at a friend’s house and they had an LCD TV and an XBOX 360 with just factory settings on and as soon as the viewing started I was bothered by the way it looked. It felt weird like I was watching reality TV or something.

HDTV and "soap opera" effect over 2 years ago

I don’t see anyone mentioning plasma tvs. I have 46" Panasonic Viera plama tv and it’s never had these problems. Plasmas are better for viewing movies (really, they have a better picture quality overall). It’s too bad they have a bad rep due to the burn-in issue which is really not that big of an issue these days.

Top 10 albums of 2010 over 2 years ago

Jirin
Kanye’s album is a good album with a few standout singles. The mixing and the sampling is very good, but the album gets most of it’s praise because they think Kanye’s public behavior is just that audacious.

American critics always give high marks to provocation for the sake of provocation because they think it gives them street cred. So when they hear a lyric like ‘Choke the South Park writers with a fish dick’ and a song where a girl tells Chris Rock that she has become much more proficient at lovemaking because Kanye West taught her, they feel obligated to say it’s the greatest thing ever.

Pretty well said on Kanye’s album. I would say it is very good though and that in addition to the quality of the music there is the quality and variety of Kanye’s voice and flow as well as a thematic unity that is expresses in the album.
As far as the critics go I think they also like him a lot because he’s so conflicted AND self-aware, which is considered compelling. As much as he is bold, bombastic and arrogant, he is also reflective, critical and self-deprecating.

*oh, and I’m pretty sure he says " choke a South Park writer with a fishstick".

And to be fair he also says this in the same verse:

“Is hip hop, just a euphemism for a new religion
the soul music of the slaves that the youth is missing?”

And the skit with Chris Rock isn’t just comedy. In it’s context and with the music behind it, it can be seen as really sad.

I think a lot of the album is intended to be sad, especially that song. Not sure about that skit though. I always skip it now.

Help me decide what to watch over 2 years ago

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I know I want to watch something – but I have a hard time picking a dvd from my collection when I don’t have a particular film in my mind. I may have an idea of what I’m genrally in the mood for or more likely what I’m NOT in the mood for. So I look at all the dvds/blurays on my shelves and hope something jumps out at me as a must watch but I just get several possibilities.
For example, right now I know I want to watch something that’s not too heavy or too serious . . . that’s about it. I kinda sorta narrowed it down to the following:
Training Day
Sullivan’s Travels
Toy Story 3
Lola Montes
some Jacques Tati
. . .

maybe this can can become an (un)official thread for people interested getting help deciding what to watch :)

Thanks. I’ve seen all but Lola Montes. Of the ones I have seen, it’s been the longest since Sullivan.

@ERIK – I know just what you’re saying. I’ve been holding off watching The Red Shoes for months. Still not in the right mood to take the whole thing in. (pause)
