Lynch’s films may never get the Criterion treatment, as Lynch likes to be very hands-on with his movies when they get authored. I don’t know if Criterion would allow that. I second Elephant by Van Sant, that is a brilliant and beautiful film.
His visual style is bland, his writing is often laughably bad, and watch Death Proof for some of the worst directing of female actors I think I’ve ever seen. He’s also probably a real creep.

I get choked up near the end of The Life Aquatic, when he sees the Jaguar Shark and that Sigur Ros song starts playing. What a moment.
