OMG! The killer is a blurry Korean man!!! And you’re convinced it was either the ‘good detective’ or some other total stranger!…I’m glad you’re not an actual detective… Haha, I’m just busting your balls Joe.
The movie is based on real events that occurred in Korea between 1986 and 91. The actual killer was never discovered…hence an unsolved murder mystery.
The book really made an impression on me four years ago when I read it and it was hard for me to imagine them developing it into a film but I think they did a pretty damn good job on it.
Yeah, the ending wasn’t as touching as the book’s because it was a little too good to be true, but it still ended similar to the book. The one part that struck me really hard during the movie, which I won’t easily forget, was when the father stripped the theif bare and left him. In the book, it was the old man, (i think I’m remembering this correctly, maybe not) that robbed them. I like the way the movie separated the characters.
As for your theory, I like it. Very interesting. I picked up hints of that when we saw the dog because I don’t believe the family was ‘following’ them since the shelter. That was quite a ways back. (could’ve been a different dog) If the director was indeed going for the fantasy however, I don’t know that he gave it enough ‘umph.’
A little confused here… I’m surprised at how much flak this moving is catching over not being “exactly” like the book. I thought it was pretty damn close to the book. (I didn’t expect it to be. And I wouldn’t have been pissed if it wasn’t. I read the book. Now I’m watching a movie.) The book wasn’t very meaty with actual plot but more so with feelings and that’s tough to film. The movie did a fine job at capturing those same feelings. I think all this flak is making my appreciation for the film even greater.
I’ve got a couple of friends who I take long trips with. This past winter we were in Mexico and Central America for 3 months and there was often chilling time. So when we were hanging out on the beach, at a hostel or waiting for a bus we’d read a novel out loud to each other. Every character would be someone with a unique voice.
We’d read Matthew Reilly books, which are the best cheesy action novels; so there would be plenty of characters saying stupid one liners and what not. We had Arnold, that old dude from Jurassic Park, Michael Jackson, Rolloff, Michael Ironside, and plenty more. I think my best impersonation was Walken. A poor man’s Arnold is always a fun one too. If you ever get a chance to do this, definitely use Reilly books.
I guess I really enjoy bad movies because I enjoyed plenty of the films listed on here… including Evil Dead 2, the Ernest movies and Waterworld…WATERWORLD!?!..this movie is amazing! Hell, even Battlefield Earth has drinking game merits. I won’t even go into the actual ‘good’ movies listed here.
With that said, the WORST MOVIE EVER MADE is…
KNOWING – I saw this in Korea with my Korean co-teachers since it was the only movie that was in English. Due to this reason, I felt fully responsible for the outcome and as the credits began rolling I remember wishing I was anywhere other than sitting in that theater. Not even Nicolas Cage’s goofy ass could save this train wreck. Immediately after posting this I’m going to become a fan of Waterworld and give Knowing an ‘acknowledgment star’.
Haven’t seen the first two. But I have had the good fortune to see Breaking Point and Speed. Would recommend being drunk for both of them… Bonuses to both: Speed has Dennis Hopper and Jeff Daniels whose name usually alludes me and I have to call him Harry. Point Break also stars the Swayze. Both movies are pretty cool.
Since you posted this 8 hours ago you’ve probably watched all four by now and are pretty toasted. Which was your favorite??
@valentina How about those Presidents masks? Now, those were hotttt. haha. I do love that scene though when they make a flame thrower at the gas pumps…sweet.
Did Takeshi Kaneshiro’s Zhuge Liang (Red Cliff) remind anyone else of Orlando Bloom’s Legolas (Lord of the Rings) ?
To be fair, I’ve only seen Kaneshiro in Red Cliff so I can’t say that his acting is the same. I’ll have to watch a few more to make that claim but I’ll be damned if their acting/ characters weren’t similar in these two movies (Red Cliff and LOTF).
Connect with nature and use it to understand the overall picture. Always in deep thought with the same squinting facial expression. Speak with a mysterious voice in poetic language. Neither seem like they have an evil bone in their body. Even in scenes where he didn’t say anything and simply walked across the screen I was reminded of Orlando Bloom.
I found his MUBI quote to be somewhat interesting:
“A melody can be made with only a few notes, right? In acting, it’s the same, there are only a limited number of characters and a limited number of ways to play them.”
Seems like an odd thing for an actor to say but from what I’ve seen of Bloom he seems to follow the same guidelines.
Does anyone else see this resemblance? Any other movies where this seems to be the case?
I’m with you on that Alex…it’s nostalgic for me too. I’m also a big fan of 28 Days Later and Sunshine. (Though I remember 28 Days slacking a bit in the second half…)
I will say that I enjoyed Kaneshiro in Red Cliff a lot more than I’ve enjoyed Bloom in…well, anything. As for being a MILLION times hotter I don’t know. You’d probably know better than I. They’re both a little feminine and if you type “Bloom and Kaneshiro” into Google and look at the first two pictures they look very similar. Different ethnicities, of course, but similar. More so than Johnny Depp anyways. Looks aside, the characters were similar, as well as, dialogue delivery and mannerisms (especially the "I’m-thinking Squint).
Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll check it out and let you know. In the meantime you should check out Flesh Gordon…the only thing that would’ve made it better is Kaneshiro! (Not really, you might hate me if you do…)
I like the theater but live in Korea so only have the option of watching bad Hollywood films with an occasional good one. So most of my viewing is done at HOME ON A LOW END PROJECTOR which is good for size but not high quality image.
I unfortunately DOWNLOAD most of my movies due to lack of many reasonable options. Wish I could Netflix out here.
I enjoy watching movies with friends and don’t mind a little noise if the people are actually into the movie. But I get super disturbed if someone is talking for the sake of talking or not related to what’s happening on the screen.
Not sure if there’s another thread for this (I find Mubi quite difficult to navigate sometimes) but I came across this at work today (shh).
I’ve only seen the movie once and haven’t watched it since reading this theory but check it out if you’re interested. It’s about the ending, so obviously a SPOILER.

Smokey, don’t want to ignore your original post. I find myself influenced by a films popularity at times. Sometimes I don’t even rate or comment on it if it’s a well known movie. I figured everyone already had an opinion on Inception so I didn’t even bother…though I still read the forums. I thought it was a pretty good movie. It made me think, “That was pretty cool. Glad I caught that in the theater,” but it didn’t totally blow me away. It did lead to some interesting conversations if I recall correctly. I can’t go into great detail about it because it has been quite a long time.
I liked Shutter Island more. I lucked out in that I didn’t know anything about it, plot wise and other; hadn’t seen any trailers or heard anything. I usually prefer it that way. Someone says you should see a movie and I say “Okay, tell me no more!” Mostly because I don’t want to be influenced.
Sorry for rambling. Check out the picture above. Interesting detail.
Well…I finally got a chance to read through a few pages and I must say….what a bunch of bullshit. Arnold is returning to the big screen and you’re talking about Stallone?? I mean, I like Stallone and all but we’re talking about Arnold “I’ll-Tear-Off-Your-Goddamn-Arms” Schwarzenegger. He’s a ridiculous classic and he’s back. It’s been the best bit of news in a long time.
Movie Drinking Games. Because who is anyone kidding? Is WILLOW really going to be ruined by drinking?
I realize there is a conversation running about drinking games (card games and what not) and a thread about what you think about drinking. Most said ‘No’ so this one probably isn’t for you.
WARNING:
Before anyone gets their unders twisted… it’s only for fun. YOU CAN STOP anytime you’d like. Binge drinking is BAD for you. Drinking and Driving is BAD too! And you must be 21 in the U.S., age varies elsewhere.
Let the games begin.
Total Recall
Drink Anytime:
1) Someone Says “Mars”
2) Arnold Kills Someone
3) Arnold Does His “AUGHHGHAAGHUUHG” Scream
*Last two are good for most Arnold movies
Willow
Drink Anytime:

2) Someone Says “Willow” (Optional)
3) Willow Falls Down
4) Willow Tries to Do Magic
*Finish What You’re Holding When the Brownie Says “Beer” (It’s only one time.)
I didn’t feel irked by the ending either. Or forced to try and figure it out. That’s what surprised me. So many people saying they had to see it twice to understand the ending and that it was so confusing. Little disappointed on that front. I thought it was pretty straight forward. They explained the whole thing.
I’m not sure where I was reading this (I think somewhere, maybe on this thread) but I too would’ve preferred no/less explanation and actually forcing me to think. It was spoon fed. I thought it was a quality movie but I WANTED TO BE CONFUSED.
I remember after watching Mulholland Drive I was twitching and drooling on the floor (not literally). I went for a drive afterward and stopped the car on some backroad and was just staring at this little bird sitting on a fence. Like I expected it to give me some kind of answer (really). Haha.
I wanted that feeling with INCEPTION. I wanted to figure something out. I feel like Nolan pulled his punches so that it would be more excepted by the masses. But it was still visually awesome, had great acting and I like dreams. So good movie.
ON TOPIC: If someone tells me something is unbelievably good I tend to be a bit disappointed. If someone says something sucks I sometimes end up liking it a little more because I didn’t expect much in the first place.
Ahhh hell…I have to actually work now…ha, it’s a tough life, ain’t it? More on topic later.
For anyone interested, Hard Ticket to Hawaii and Malibu Express, two ridiculous movies by Andy Sidaris, have finally been posted to Mubi. These are two of the greatest drinking movies to watch with friends.
