perpetually in the minority and prone to ecstatic proclamation.
“They hacked away the undergrowth and opened up the grave. The coffin boards had already rotted away, but the lady’s body within the coffin was uncorrupted and still slightly warm to the touch. He wrapped her in a shroud and carried her home, laying her in a warm place. Her breathing was faint, tenuous like fine threads of silk. He fed her small portions of nourishing broth, and by midnight she was fully revived. She always said to him afterwards, ‘Those twenty years were like a dream.’”
STATEMENT ON RATINGS
I more or less make my ratings up and have no criteria for what merits a 5 over a 1, let alone for discriminating between 5 and 4. However, here’s a rough idea of what sometimes goes through my mind when i do ratings. all commas below, except those in parenthesis, represent the word “OR”
5 – philosophically innovative in some way, spooky, nonsense, degrading and repellent, made by one of my fav directors and so capitalizes on my dogmatism
4 – successful as some type of genre flick, contains a transcendent acting performance, stylistically innovative in some way, darn good fun
3 – i like this movie but i won’t justify it to you or argue about it because i don’t like it that much
2 – pretentious, tries too hard to be spooky, gets all political (specifically, gets all western liberal), too long
1 – any non-perfect war movie, shitty music, philosophically disagreeable and so falls prey to my pettiness, nonsense (perhaps pernicious nonsense)
*NOTE:i know nothing of the current cinema. the only new movies i ever go see are basically the animated ones for the kids.
