WHICH MOVIES...PUT OUT IN LAST 5 YEARS...DO YOU THINK WILL ONE DAY JOIN THE CRITERION COLLECTION? over 3 years ago

Certainly some Lynch. I was so surprised when I first found out that none of his films were printed by Criterion. Also, some more Guy Madden and Kieslowski would be much appreciated.

More Guy Madden. His films are a perfect match for Criterion.

Kurosawa: HIGH AND LOW – i dont think anyone has mentioned it yet, and it is so fantastic. its also fairly western, and in my opinion, a nice starting place for Kurosawa.

Fellini: Nights of Cabiria THEN 8 1/2.

Also, while you didn’t mention this director, i’d check out Kieslowski. His films are extremely beautiful and incredibly philosophical and thought provoking. And for some fun check out Brazil and Guy Madden. Watch whatever you can and lots of it!

You choose the book to make into a film. Then choose the director. Go! over 3 years ago

J.M. Coetzee’s Elizabeth Costellos directed by Fellini
Modern day Antigone directed by Coen Brothers
Nietzsche’s Zarathustra directed by Aronofsky

and I know he has been interested in it for years, but id love to see Lynch’s adaptation of Kafka’s The Metamorphosis

Any particular criterion essay standout? over 3 years ago

While all of the essays in the book are good, the Slavoj Zizek essay in The Double Life of Veronique is absolutely perfect. I wish Criterion would allow Zizek to write essay for every film they release. His readings go beyond what most film critics can say and explore philosophical concepts that deserve to be discussed.

Opinions of Van Sant? over 3 years ago

paranoid park was one of those movies that, immediately after watching it, i had to purchase the dvd for myself. christopher doyle is amazing, and the narrative and subjective depth into the main characters paranoia and distress is simply astounding.

I’ll be the only one, but. . . I say High and Low. It’s an amazing film, and the release is beautifully packaged and has tons of amazing bonus features.

What is No Country actually about? over 3 years ago

most obviously it is, like all coen films, about the unexpected and what is sneaking up behind you. chigurh is the ultimate agent of fate throughout the entire movie, and then towards the end we see that even he is vulnerable to chance and fate (the car crash). the most explicit reference to this is the lady by the pool and her conversation with moss. they talk about how he is looking for whats coming and she says that is always hard to do. on top of this, it is about accepting the unpredictability of life and how the older generation (old men) and not as willing to say “ok…ill live in this world” and tommy lee jones says in the opening voice over. there is obviously a lot more there, but i think that is the gist of it.

Atheist movies? over 3 years ago

Fanny and Alexander? As Wikipedia puts it: “In addition to its themes of Christianity, repentance, submission to authority, and the questioning of God’s existence, the film deals with love, estrangement, ghosts, and the paranormal, as well as the more common Bergman theme of existentialism.”

Hitchcock's Influence over 3 years ago

one example that came to mind right away was in What Lies Beneath. The scene in which michelle pfeiffer’s character is checking out her neighbors house with binoculars is a perfect emulation of the scene in Rear Window in which the killer notices Jefferies.

Do you think we will learn of some future releases this week? If so, what films do you think they will be?

Wings of Desire? Last Year at Marienbad?

Yes, Criterion’s June releases. And all three of these films would be nice.

Any other ideas, people?

According to the Criterion Forum no one is at Criterion on the weekends. So, tomorrow it is. Then we can end all silly speculations and talk about the actual announcements.

Someone of the Criterion Forum said afternoon or evening. However, midnight would be nice. How many films do they usually announce at once? Three? Four? I’m just praying for Wings of Desire.

YOUR OPINION OF THE ABSOLUTE BEST DIRECTORS WORKING TODAY about 3 years ago

Not many mentions of Wim Wenders here. He’s gotta be on this list. The Coen Brothers too. Don’t think I’ve seen them on anyone’s list.

Films about Voyeurism? about 3 years ago

So, I’m preparing to do some research on film and philosophy, and namely voyeurism and spectatorship and their relation to self-understanding/definition of the self. A large part of this undertaking is going to involve watching tons and tons of films dealing (explicitly or implicitly) with voyeurism (how horrible this will be! watching tons and tons of films? ah!). Anyway, I figure that this is as good a place as any to compile a list. So please, flex your film muscles and make some suggestions.

Here is my list thus far:

The Lives of Others
Rear Window
Psycho
Vertigo
Blue Velvet
The Converstation
Blow-Up
Spies (Fritz Lang’s)
Peeping Tom
Sisters
Blow Out
Dressed to Kill
sex, lies, and videotape
Being John Malkovich
Wings of Desire
A Short Film About Love (and the corresponding Dekalogue episode)
Red (Colors Trilogy)
Cache
Benny’s Video

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. And remember, even if the film isnt explicitly about voyeurism (Being John Malkovich, Wings of Desire, etc.) it could be helpful. So whatever pops into your head…

Thanks

Favorite Moment In A David Lynch Movie about 3 years ago

Not sure if anyone has said this, but the scene in which Nick Cage sings Love Me by Elvis in Wild at Heart is pretty amazing. And the scene when Defoe sort of rapes Laura Dern is pretty sweet too.

Thanks for the heads up Col. Dax, however, I don’t think I will make it through my classes on Monday if I am up at 4:30.

As far as blind buying goes, I understand the risk, Strawdawg. I recently received a giftcard though and always enjoy taking that risk. With Criterions it is rarely is a disaster.

Criterion's April Releases? about 3 years ago

So, in a week or so Criterion will be announcing some more titles. Hopefully this month won’t cause as much drama as last (Benjamin Button, cover art, etc.) That said, any predictions? I’m really hoping that Wings of Desire will be announced this month. Other than that I have no guesses…

Which is the best of Kieslowski's Three Colors about 3 years ago

Red. Irene Jacob and Kieslowski are a match made in film heaven. That said, I think The Double Life of Veronique is Kieslowski’s best. It’s a stunningly beautiful film that opens up so my questions – questions about narrative as well as philosophical/phenomenological questions. I wish we had a philosopher like Heidegger around today that could being to analyze Veronique. Though, Zizek’s article in the Criterion package is quite amazing. (I know this is off topic. Sorry.)

If only Criterion were a democracy!

I’m also hoping for some crazy surprises like a David Lynch (I know this is impossible), more Lars von Trier, or a Guy Madden.
