I’m not a critic, I’m not a connoiseur, just a girl who enjoys watching movies, and doesn’t think a movie is good if you have to make an effort to watch it. Thus, my opinions and ratings are personal and subjective.

I guess Irréversible is one of those films that has been nearly ruined for some by hype and such, but I think you still don't really know the film until you've seen it and felt its visceral impact, witnessed its framing and frenetic pacing... I don't want to say too much, but the end of the film makes some very strong nods toward 2001-style transcendence. You'll just have to see. :) I like a fair amount of doom metal as well!
Sadistic, or masochistic? Actually, I tend to look for the beauty in ugly things, or the beauty they illuminate. The closer you get to the source of light, the deeper and darker the shadows become... no? Irréversible for example may be brutal and dizzying, but its implied parallels to 2001: A Space Odyssey suggest that it's meant to be transcendent—it's about how it makes you look into yourself, and what you take away from it. I find film and art like this to be life-affirming, rather than life-annihilating. Exterminating angels abound. Some black metal is like this, as are my favorite bands like Swans, Coil, etc.
