I love Dexter, and shame on you JP, Matsuka IMO is the most interesting. His knowledge of XXX fetishes and sadistic jargon makes his presence humorous.
My name is Kevin. I do a small immature online store called Underground Collector, and I’m the creator of the mixtape “debris.” and when I’m not watching really awful movies (predominately 80’s VHS tapes), I enjoy stimulating my mind with the occasional Criterion. I keep to myself to avoid allowing people to know how unintelligent I am, but I pipe in once in awhile when I truly grasp the subject.
Wow! 3-4 hours of Nazi’s being terrorized by a monster… Brilliant!!! I know eBay is littered with bootleg DVDs that were ripped from the Laserdisc, so they should look alright and be accessible. There’s a very audacious fellow who put together these DVD sets that he would like to present to Mann of how the Keep’s “25th Anniversary” DVD should look. Please check them out- they are VERY impressive sets…
Absolutely not! I love the Keep! My previous comment was 100% sarcasm free, otherwise,I wouldn’t be flaunting links of brilliant D.I.Y. DVD sets that I’m envious of. It is truly one of my favorites. I’m a sucker for Nazi/Horror exploits. In all honesty (and I do consider myself to a certain extent to a fan of truly good film), I would choose the Keep over many of his other more recognizable and respectable titles.
Tyler McGaughey- I am horribly ignorant. My response of “Real Killers” was directed at you, as it has that song as a main theme, but after looking at your post again, I am just now recognizing that Mann directed Manhunter, which I originally did not know, and to further my ignorance, I picked it up today, but mostly because it was this /100000 set from Anchor Bay. I’m going to watch it now!
Josef K., music is a luxury that you cannot afford, therefore, you are a thief. In regards to you not being the same person you are today, you’re right- you shouldn’t be this way. You’re simply a thief.
In regards to films, thanks to pirating, many companies I enjoy are now going under, and the rest are switching to VOD due to costs and pirating. If you really want to hear some interesting views, invest some time into reading this thread on AV Maniacs, which began with a simple question about the longevity of Cinemageddon, a popular torrent tracker that predominately hosts torrents of hard to find/OOP films…
“The other way I use is called “importing”. And if it’s not available elsewhere I have another method called “waiting” and possibly “complaining”.”
I like that. The thing is, even though our copyright laws don’t favor releases across seas, you’re pirating it doesn’t mean someone in the film industry isn’t loosing money.
I stick to my previous comment. As far as I know, Heaven and Earth Magic hasn’t had a proper release, and it’s even getting hard to find an original copy (with the original score) on the gray market.
As far as others go, I think Criterion would do well from a profit standpoint if they released some of Svankmajer’s films. Have you seen how much copies of “Scenes from the Surreal” go for on Amazon?
And another thing that people seem to forget is that Criterion released a 3 LD set of Akira. They’re not foreign to animation, they’ve just steered clear of it for the past decade.
Another film that I think would be nice is Belladonna of Sadness, yet another Japanese animation.
I don’t have time to read all these really long responses, but I’m going to reiterate a few things.
Music and films are luxuries. If you can’t afford them, get a better job.
Any time you get something in full that is commercially available, I’d call it stealing. Sample before you buy it? That’s what trailers are for. Give me one DVD production company that doesn’t offer trailers to their films. They don’t exist.
In regards to importing, and players, if there is enough demand, a company will release the film. If there isn’t, then yes, you need to take the step to get a region free player and import the title. Just because it is conveniently available in your home country doesn’t justify getting an illegitimate copy.
And if you’re going to tell me “Trailers are just a tease” or some B.S. like that, give me a company that doesn’t send out screeners to review sites, and I’ll personally contact them and see what I can do.
Or hell, start your own review site, and get some free screeners.
“I’ll only say that my point was that a moderate piracy on the part of somewhat socially conscious people will not lead to the collapse of the film industry.”
I hate to break it to you Richard, but the general assembly you call “people” are NOT socially conscious. Just because someone downloads a movie and likes it doesn’t mean they’re going to go and buy it, and if you think that’s true, you’re nuts,
Let’s face it. If it wasn’t for the internet, how would someone decide “which films [they] really want to support” other than trailers, reviews, misc. marketing? Sneaking into theatres? Stealing movies off shelves?
Wicked, Wicked… really? I guess you’re right, just the mere concept of “Duo-Vision” scares me. Another 1up on the Exorcist III. I’ve always thought it to be quite creepy.
I just finished Pedro Almodóvar’s What Have I Done to Deserve This? and I’m wondering if someone can tell me what to watch next from Pedro? Preferably another dark comedy…
