Gordon has a real sense of the absurd and often manages to draw humour out of the most grotesque situations. However he never had the consistency of his piers and as a result I thing Re-Animator is his only real masterwork. This said, Space Truckers is an underrated cult classic ripe for rediscovery.
I’d also like to chuck in for consideration George A. Romero. I think he often falls through the cracks of serious film discussion because he made genre cinema and did it without the backing of the studios or major stars. What he achieved in the 1970s away from Hollywood and with miniscule financial backing I find astounding.
Here are his hits:
1972 Jacks Wife
1973 The Crazies
1976 Martin
1978 Dawn of the Dead
I once spoke to Dawn of the Dead actor Ken Foree in a urinal. He was in the cubicle (taking care of business) and called out to me while I was washing my hands. Since he was in the UK he wanted to know of any good places to eat. I recommended he try an oatcake. And yes, thanks to Ken, it smelt like the dead were walking the earth.
Dead and Lovely
Circus
Eyeball Kid
Big in Japan
Martha
Just the Right Bullets
I Don’t Wanna Grow Up
Fumblin’ with the Blues
Jockey Full of Bourbon
Invitation to the Blues
