Noriko’s Dinner Table is one of my to 3 favorite films of all time. I’ve never watched anything so introspective before. Made me think about a lot of things without even realizing it (even though I’m always thinking a lot). I’ve never seen anything quite like it.
I may be over-hyping it, but I just love that film. Although it’s a prequel/sequel/side story to Suicide Club, it has a very different tone.
I’ve heard that the film is pretty much dead now =/
But maybe he still plans to make it in the future.
At least we have Guilty Of Romance to look forward to.
I certainly agree with your thoughts on Noriko’s Dinner Table and Suicide Club. They can both be standalone films or act as parts of a whole. In fact, I went in to Noriko’s Dinner Table not having any clue that it related to Suicide Club, and I was excited when it started referencing it… and on top of that, giving me something I hadn’t quite seen before.
I remember when I felt the same about anime… it was like Japanese live action films just couldn’t hold my interest.
But that was until I stumbled upon some of the most interesting films I’ve ever seen. Sometimes, you just have to keep digging til you find something unique.
Same with Japanese music.
I’ve listened to some of his other projects, but they haven’t quite kept my attention like Porcupine Tree and Blackfield, although I do like some of his solo stuff.
And I’m still really liking the newest Blackfield album.
I’m still looking forward to his newest project with Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth.
The ones I’ve seen from this list are Still Walking, Nobody Knows, Spirited Away, Tokyo Sonata, The Taste Of Tea, Kakera, Linda Linda Linda, Visitor Q, All About Lily Chou Chou, Funuke, Summer Wars, Ichi the Killer, Hana and Alice, Paprika, Vital, Zebraman, Be With You, Big Man Japan, and Memories of Matsuko.
Not sure what Frank W would recommend, but out of the ones I’ve seen, the ones I’d recommend most would…
The Taste Of Tea (slow-moving, but charming, quirky, and humorous)
Linda Linda Linda (especially if you ever tried to start a band back in high school)
Visitor Q (if you want something pretty crazy)
All About Lily Chou Chou
and Memories of Matsuko.
..maybe Kakera as well.
Summer Wars was my favorite out of the various anime on this list.
I liked pretty much all the films I’ve seen from this list though.
Oh and, I don’t think I saw it on the list, but I’d highly recommend Survive Style 5+. http://mubi.com/films/survive-style-5
Just wanted to say it’s pretty awesome you were able to see both of those in an actual theater.
I know this thread has been kinda dead for over a half a year, but Sono’s already got more on the way.
I’ve heard rumors of some of his older stuff being released in a box set, but I’m not sure what region…
However, I was able to find one of his 90’s films "佳子ですけど” (Keiko Desu Kedo) online, so maybe there’s hope for more of us to see some of his earlier work…
I’m glad Love Exposure is finally being released here, especially on Netflix.
I got the UK DVD a couple years back.
I actually saw Cold Fish at Wal-Mart awhile back, but I’ve heard the region 1 did a horrible job with subtitles… putting too much on the screen at once.
Never thought to look for a Lost thread on here.
I don’t think anything truly “perfect” exists, but that doesn’t matter… to me, Lost was (and still is) the best TV series I’ve ever seen. Plot, character development, cinematography, twists, suspense, sub-plots, etc… all the intricacies were written to fit together so well.
And although this thread has been dead for almost year… I do have to say that’s it’s pretty dumb when someone tells another their opinion is “wrong”. Way to go. I love how classy people on here can be.
Wow, I got wayyy behind on this thread. haha.
I completely missed your reference! My bad.
Also, the the guy that mentioned The Wire… I’ve heard nothing but good things about that show.
Can anyone content on it’s intellectual aspect?
It seems like it’s going to have plenty of great drama and suspense regardless. It’s on my list of shows to check out.
Thanks for that response. I guess what I meant to ask was, is it “smart”? I mean, from everything I’ve heard, it sounds like smart writing. The subject matter doesn’t sound that interesting to me… but neither does a bunch of people crash landing on an island ;)
I guess you can think of it as “not everything in life is fully explained or turns out the way you thin it should”… but that’s just me rationalizing the imperfections of Lost. haha.
I always thought that maybe since Walt was just a kid, Jacob was okay with him leaving the island for good.

Just another comment on Love Exposure… I can’t think of any other film that comes close to 4 hours that I can enjoy watching the entire way through.

I’m going to attempt to not watch any teasers or trailers for it… same thing I did with Cold Fish.
It was very difficult not to… haha.

Are Sono’s older films still suppose to be released on R1 or R2 DVD with English subs sometime?
